What you'll be doing
The Senior Speech Pathologist (SP) works both autonomously and collaboratively as part of the interdisciplinary Brighter Beginnings Health and Development Checks (BBHDC) Preschool Team, providing child-focused health and development screening, assessment and brief interventions for preschool age-children attending Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres across the Northern Sydney Region. The BBHDC program is a collaboration between NSW Health, the NSW Department of Early Education and preschools and aims to identify children’s health and development support needs and enhance their access to early intervention services before they start primary school.
This senior SP role manages a client caseload and holds specialist expertise and advanced practice skills in infant and child communication and language skill development during the first 2000 days of life. They apply this high-level knowledge when conducting complex SP assessments in ECE settings. The SP works in partnership with parent/carers, assisting them to understand their children’s speech, language and communication skills in the early years, which supports their lifelong speech and language development, learning potential and their social participation outcomes before they start school. They work in partnership with families to help build family and care giver capacity to support their children’s development and to develop effective recommendations and care plans for children from diverse backgrounds, including vulnerable families. The role also facilitates referrals and supports families to access children's SP and other health services and ensures safe clinical handover. They also apply high level interpersonal communication skills to actively contribute to interdisciplinary team case reviews and children’s care coordination meetings/ conferences. They provide clinical education and supervision for students.
As part of the BBHDC Team the role assists with developing resources suitable for children from diverse backgrounds and offers advice to ECE staff to promote optimal communication and social participation skill for children’s development.
The BBHD Team is part of the Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) Child, Youth and Family (CYF) Community Health Service. The overall service philosophy of care revolves around working in partnership with families, providing child-centred, safe, culturally sensitive, trauma and evidence-informed, neurodiversity affirming and integrated care that optimises lifelong health, development, learning, wellbeing and social participation outcomes for children and families.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:
- A bachelor or post graduate degree in Speech Pathology which provides eligibility for membership of Speech Pathology Australia. Demonstrated high level clinical expertise in paediatric Speech Pathology with evidence of extensive clinical experience as a Level 2 Paediatric Speech Pathologist
- Demonstrated ability to provide trauma-informed care, and ability to work in partnership with families to respond to the needs of vulnerable families and priority population groups - with ability to engage with and provide information, guidance and education to parents, caregivers and Early Childhood educators to promote optimal child communication and language skill development.
- Demonstrated excellent written communication, interpersonal and verbal communication skills with ability to establish effective, collaborative working relationships with clients and other service providers to negotiate and coordinate interdisciplinary care that optimises outcomes for children.
