About our team/Mō te tīma
The Department of Surgical Sciences excels in clinical teaching and training, linking science with clinical research, and developing our discipline nationally and internationally.
The role/Te mahi
Our research group based in Dunedin Hospital, is conducting multiple research projects. We are looking for a Research Technician to help with the following:

To assist in exercise training and testing within our surgical outcomes group, as part of a project exploring the use of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to improve postoperative outcomes.
To recruit patients for a research project relating to 3D printed stoma guards and patients with parastomal hernias (PSH), including fitting of equipment (stoma guard), setting up interviews, recording and summarising data for the project lead, Dr Kari Clifford.
To recruit patients for a trial examining the effects of prophylactic antibiotics on anastomotic leaks and surgical site infections after elective colorectal surgery. This will include taking rectal swabs and collecting clinical data.
To recruit patients for the canine cancer detection study, including collecting urine samples and liaising with the K9MD research team.
To recruit patients for a study examining the use of an operative humidification device. This will include data collection and taking photos of surgical sites during an open abdominal procedure.

Key tasks of this role include:

Recruiting patients.
Training patients.
Setting up laboratory equipment.
Recording data.

We are looking for candidates with:

Excellent organisational skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish patient rapport.
Ability to interact compassionately and tactfully with participants.
Ability to work independently as well as within a strong team environment.
Willingness to learn new skills.

Experience with cardiopulmonary exercise testing and/or exercise training would be ideal, but full training will be given.
The appointee will need to hold a current first aid certificate for this role. Ideally, candidates will have this at the time of application, but if not, the candidate will be given the opportunity to obtain this before commencing.

This is a fixed term (until 1 January 2027) position, located in Dunedin

Hours are variable (minimum 10 hours – maximum 40 hours month). Work hours will depend on patient availability and will be by negotiation with the successful candidate.
The appointment range for this role is $59,285 to $63,651, Top of Range $68,744 (pro rata)
