CENTRE FOR HEALTH, ACTIVITY AND REHABILITATION RESEARCH (CHARR)
ALLIED HEALTH STAFFING METHODOLOGY EVALUATION PROJECT

About our team/Mō te tīma

Based out of the CHARR Centre at the University of Otago School of Physiotherapy the Allied Health Staffing Methodology Evaluation team is a group of health service researchers and biostatisticians with expertise in qualitative and quantitative methods.
Led by Dr Miranda Buhler, they will evaluate a methodology currently being piloted that uses data on workforce staffing levels and health care activity to drive quality patient care and outcomes.
The evaluation aims to:
  • Understand if the methodology achieves safe staffing levels and skill mix and;
  • Identify recommendations for roll out and future iterations of the Allied Health staffing provisions approach.
The role/Te mahi
As an Assistant Research Fellow, you will assist with all aspects of project set up, and coordination.
Key areas of focus for this role are:
  • Literature and document review and information synthesis.
  • Contributing to qualitative research protocol development.
  • Coordinating team and stakeholder hui and correspondence.
  • Coordinating and conducting qualitative interviews according to a semi-structured interview schedule.
  • Preparing ethics application and locality authorisation applications.
  • Supporting qualitative interviews/focus groups/hui/fono and drafting of preliminary reports.
  • Taking meeting minutes and field notes.
  • Reviewing and cleaning machine-transcribed interview data.
  • Producing and presenting progress reports to the research team.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
This position is suited to someone with a research background and experience in health, sociology or human resources.
We are looking for organised and motivated candidates with an ability to work as part of a team and independently.
Successful candidates will also have:
  • Minimum 2 years’ research experience ideally including health or other public service workforce or policy settings.
  • Strong communication and relational skills, ideally with some knowledge of te reo me ōna tikanga Māori and/or Pacific language and protocols.
  • Good understanding of the New Zealand health system, and social and economic context.
  • Excellent spoken and written English language communication skills.
  • Computer literacy including use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Teams, and NVivo software.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy.
  • A passion for increasing knowledge about how to improve health care access, outcomes and equity.
  • A commitment to developing their own research capability.

Further details/Pūroko
This is a fixed term (10 February – 24 December 2025), full time (37.5 hours) position, based in Dunedin.
Hours are 8.30am - 5pm, Monday to Friday by mutual agreement with the research team and successful candidate.
For the most part work will need to be carried out onsite from a University of Otago campus in Dunedin, Christchurch or Wellington.
Project Interviews will be carried out at multiple sites across Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill. Data analysis will be carried out in group meetings in Dunedin or by Zoom.
Transport costs between usual work location and interview sites will be covered. Arrangements will also be made for any overnight accommodation and meals as required.

The salary range for an Assistant Research Fellow is $58,341 - $78,531. The successful candidate will be appointed to an appropriate step on the scale dependent on skills, experience and qualifications.
