The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Research Grants & Project Advisor. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Manager, Discipline Teaching Technicians and receiving day-to-day instruction from the Associate Deans, Research, this full-time position provides specialized support and advice for UCVM's research agreements and research programs, both pre- and post-award, in close coordination with the Senior Research Advisor. This position works closely with faculty, Office of Research Services, and all other research sub-units across the university to ensure efficient and consistent application of policies and procedures.
The key purpose of the position is to advance and support the research mission of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, in close coordination with the Research Programs Manager. The incumbent is expected to support research needs within UCVM identified through individual consultation and delivery of essential support services to ensure high quality grant submissions and management of awards thereafter. The incumbent also supports research needs within the UCVM Research Office relating to operations (e.g. Research Committee Minutes), research programs and new initiatives.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Together with the other Research Grants & Project Advisor, function as a primary contact in Research Office for routing of research documents and fielding and triaging inquiries
- Assume expert role in administering and advising on the administration of UCVM's research programs (i.e. Clinical Research Fund, Veterinary Education Research Fund, Internship
- Research Fund, etc.), and sponsored research policies/procedures, and managing internal databases
- Assist with compilation of grant applications including proofreading assistance
- Review grant applications for signoff on behalf of Associate Dean, Research, including information that is confidential and sensitive in nature
- Provide general project support for UCVM such as creating new projects, moving funding between projects, and answering general project/EFIN inquiries
- Assist with preparation and compilation of interim and final reports for remittance to granting agencies. Liaise with Research Services Office, Research Accounting and other research and accounting related departments as needed
- Resolve complex accounting issues on post-award management side (e.g. cheque requisitions, invoices, journal transfers, budget revisions, consultation with sponsors, etc.)
- Tracks submission and results of grants and contracts
- Oversee and reports on budgets within specific research modules
- On behalf of UCVM and in coordination with the Research Programs Advisor, participate on key committees (e.g. USER task force) that assess and advise on operational issues that impact the university research community
- Proactively assist in finding new funding opportunities for researchers
- Administer and provide advice on internal research funding programs and initiatives. Organize and facilitate UCVM Research Office events (e.g. FIVM Seminar Series)
- Provide direct support to Associate Dean, Research role (e.g. scheduling, meetings, expenses) Provide scribe support to the UCVM Research Committee
- Provide support to teaching and research awards committees and processes
- Create and contribute to monthly office e-newsletter
- A science related post-secondary degree
- Excellent communication skills with experience in scientific report writing
- Previous knowledge or experience in an academic research based environment Proven ability to work independently
- Excellent planning and organizational skills
- Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point)
- Internet search skills required
- Experience in using a wide variety of record keeping/reporting systems and an affinity for learning IT research support systems is preferred
