The Department of Physiology & Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator. This is a highly specialized position focusing on in vivo imaging microscopy, requiring an extensive understanding of experimental design and the independent interpretation of results. Work hours may vary based on project demands and often align with grant deadlines.
The Research Associate will play a central role in advancing the research objectives of the laboratory. This includes overseeing a specialized area within the lab, ensuring the lab adapts to emerging technologies and supporting other research projects through technical knowledge.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Experimental Design & Data Collection:
    • Develop, optimize and execute in vivo imaging protocols tailored to neonatal and early-life immunology studies
    • Perform advanced in vivo imaging and microscopy on mouse models, including preparation, surgery, imaging and analysis
    • Conduct mouse model procedures, including various injection routes, tissue dissection, organ processing, and cellular analyses relevant to immunology studies
  • Data Analysis & Interpretation:
    • Analyze imaging data using specialized software (e.g., Flow Jo, confocal microscopy software) and interpret findings with a deep understanding of early-life immune development
    • Compile and present data to the Principal Investigator and research team, contributing to scientific discussions and manuscript preparation
  • Research Protocol & SOP Development:
    • Refine standard operating protocols (SOPs) for in vivo imaging and other lab techniques, ensuring protocols meet current scientific standards
    • Support the Principal Investigator in grant proposal writing by contributing technical knowledge and innovative methodologies
  • Training & Mentorship:
    • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to lab members, ensuring they acquire skills in imaging and immunology techniques
    • Assisting with experimental troubleshooting and promoting best practices for laboratory safety and compliance
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Ph.D. or Master's degree required (or equivalent experience)
  • Candidates with post-doctoral experience are preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years in biomedical research, with a focus on liver immunology and infectious diseases. Expertise in neonatal mouse care and surgery for in vivo imaging is essential
  • Prior experience with newborn and adult mouse models, including multiple routes of injection, dissection, bleeding and organ processing is absolutely required
  • 1 to 3 years of supervisory experience is an asset
  • Experience working with various mouse biological samples (e.g., liver, brain, blood, spleen, lung)
  • Experience with Flow Cytometry and Flow Jo analysis tools; ability to operate and analyze data using Cytec Aurora Flow Cytometer
  • Proficient with upright and inverted confocal microscopes and imaging analysis software
  • Familiarity with resident macrophages, macrophage ontogeny, and tissue-specific macrophage identity
  • Extensive knowledge of technical procedures and lab techniques, along with the ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support
  • A proactive approach to learning and development, with a willingness to take on new challenges
  • Demonstrated communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
  • Thorough understanding of safety codes and standards related to laboratory specialization
