Indigenous Research Project Coordinator - Infectious and Congenital Syphilis

OVERVIEW
CAAN Communities, Alliances & Networks (“CAAN”) provides a national forum for Indigenous Peoples to holistically address HIV and AIDS, HCV, STBBI, TB, Mental Health, aging and related co-morbidity issues; promotes a Social Determinants of Health Framework through advocacy; addresses mental health issues stemming from colonial trauma and lateral violence, and provides accurate and up to date resources on these issues in a culturally relevant manner for Indigenous Peoples wherever they reside.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Research Project Coordinator (RPC) will work with communities across Turtle Island to improve access to care and reduce transmission of infectious and congenital syphilis among Indigenous women. Through the engagement of young Indigenous women of childbearing age, the RPC will identify the root causes of congenital syphilis outbreaks impacting Indigenous communities as well as identify early intervention and prevention strategies for infectious and congenital syphilis using land and arts-based approaches. The second phase will be to pilot these interventions with young Indigenous women of childbearing age.
The successful candidate for this position will:
  • Prime stakeholder engagement skills including working with Indigenous community members, allies, academics, and staff members across CAAN.
  • Advocate to communities across Turtle Island on solutions concerning Infectious and Congenital Syphilis affecting Indigenous groups.
  • Ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of research and data collection.
  • Establish collegial and collaborative relationships with Indigenous communities across Turtle Island.
  • Constantly update and provide support and guidance to communities and partners on the research pertaining to Infectious and Congenital Syphilis.
  • Plan, comply, advise, and receive direction on budget allocations.
  • Travel for the arts and land-based workshops will be a requirement of this role.
  • Create and implement workplans and budgets.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Receive direction from the Research Manager for CAAN’s Research Unit and identify potential partnership opportunities on how the project correlates to other research projects.
  • Support in data gathering, sharing, and surveillance.
  • Relationship building with partners, government ministries organizations and communities.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • A university degree, diploma, and a combination of relevant research experience within a health and/or Indigenous context.
  • Ability to work with diverse Indigenous populations and show appreciation for such diversity.
  • Understand CAAN’s mandate and goals and possess a strong background, knowledge, and experience of Indigenous organizations, communities, and traditions..
  • Budget monitoring skills are essential with a responsibility on accounting for expenditures, advising on expenses, and receiving necessary approvals for such expenses; high level proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required.
  • Be proficient in using Microsoft Office 365, as well as web-based applications including search engines and tools.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Have an understanding of Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Doing.
  • Practice in holistic, trauma-informed, client-centred and culturally safe paradigm.
  • Excellent communication skills and cross-cultural communication experience.
  • Maintain a clear criminal background check.
  • Be able to work both independently and as a team member.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $55,000.00-$65,000.00 per year
