Who we are/Ko wai mātou
You will work as an integral member of the Phage-host interactions (Phi) laboratory led by Prof. Peter Fineran as part of the collaborative multi-centre, interdisciplinary Bioprotection Aotearoa Centre of Research Excellence (Co RE), which is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission, NZ. The Phi laboratory is at the forefront of research into bacteriophage biology, phage resistance and the application of phages, and is internationally recognised in these areas. The Phi lab team provides a supportive research environment and is a dynamic group that includes many experienced scientists.
The role/Te mahi
The main purpose of this position is to contribute to research objectives within our Bioprotection Aotearoa project on the “Discovery and development of our next bioprotection tools”. Primary industries face numerous pathogens, with a dwindling supply of sustainable solutions for protecting food production. You will work as part of our team to examine the emergence of phage resistance and how this might influence the application of phages as biocontrols in complex environments and mixed microbial communities.
Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
- Ph D in Bioinformatics, Genetics, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or similar field.
- Excellent microbiology, genetics and molecular biology skills.
- Experience with model and non-model bacterial species.
- Experience with bioinformatic data analyses, including of high-throughput sequencing data and comparative genomics.
- A publication record consistent with that of an active researcher performing at a high level.
- A thorough, organised, and systematic approach to laboratory practice and record keeping is essential.
- Self-motivated.
- Ability to work well in a team environment.
- High ethical standards of work.
- Excellent organisational skills.
- Experience with supervision of postgraduates or junior researchers.
- A commitment to practice in a manner consistent with the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi.
This is a full-time (1 FTE), fixed term position for two years available to start January 2025 based in Dunedin. Some flexibility in start date may be possible.
The salary for this position is $86,210 per annum.
