Canoe/Waterfront Coordinator and Program Leader
ONE POSITION
START DATE: June 16th 2025
END DATE: Approx. 3rd week of August 2025
WAGE: $672 per week
The mission of Kamp Kiwanis is to empower youth to explore, think critically, connect with their communities, and to make the most of life for themselves and others. Our mission drives our programming while having fun, being safe, and nurturing growth. Our focus is elementary school students (ages 9-12) as well as Kamp Kiwanis leadership participants (ages 13-18). Kamp Kiwanis was founded in 1951, and offers a summercamp experience at a 100% subsidy for every camper who attends Kamp Kiwanis.
We are currently seeking an energetic and inspirational Canoe/Waterfront Coordinator and Program Leader to join our team from mid-June until the end of August. You will work closely with the entire staff team to provide fun and meaningful programs to all camp participants and clients of Kamp Kiwanis. In your role you will help our summer camp program with a focus on canoeing (see job specific responsibilities below).
This is a seasonal position in an outdoor setting where staff are required to live on-site in provided staff accommodation, excluding breaks between sessions (opportunity to live on site during breaks is available). Staff accommodation includes meals that are provided during working hours.
DAYS OF WORK
Staff will be working approximately 8 days with at least 2 full days off in between. The work days can be long with irregular hours including evenings and weekends. Days of work may shift due to changing circumstances.

GENERAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform regular cleaning tasks to ensure camp adheres to a high standard of cleanliness
  • Ensure the safety of participants (physically and emotionally) including but not limited to general supervision and problem solving
  • Work as part of a team and independently in a variety of outdoor and indoor environments
  • Develop and lead outdoor recreation activities (i.e. archery, shelter building, camp wide games, etc.)
  • 24 hour supervision of participants including sleeping in the same room or building when required
  • Additional on-going development, maintenance, set up and take down of program materials
  • Enforce and follow Kamp Kiwanis Policies and Procedures
  • Assist with the rental program when applicable
  • Occasionally support food service staff making meals, serving food, and other kitchen duties
  • Other tasks that contribute to the success of the outdoor school and summer camp programs as needed
JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Communicate with participants and clients
  • Assist with Kamp Kiwanis leadership programs when applicable
  • Check in campers and ride the bus with participants to and from Calgary in the summer
  • Leading and assisting with various summer camp activities (archery, swimming, hikes, camping trips, campfire songs, canoeing, wide games, crafts, etc.)
  • Maintain facilities; clean equipment after use, ensure supplies are stored properly at the end of each use, supplies are well inventoried, and general equipment maintenance is performed
  • Organize and lead canoe sessions in a fun and safe manner
  • Assist with lifeguarding (independently as well as with other resource staff) and the safe operations of any swimming area
REQUIRED ATTRIBUTES
  • Be able to work long days with irregular hours including evenings and weekends
  • Willing to live outside the city and on-site during the work week
  • Eager to work in an outdoor environment for large portions of the day and night
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution and leadership skills
  • Proven track record working independently and in a team environment
  • Mature, positive and responsible attitude
  • Enjoy living and cooperating in community setting
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of 18 years of age by the commencement of employment
  • Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search specific to Kamp Kiwanis (employment is conditional upon receiving this)
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C (by start of employment)
  • National Lifeguard Service (NLS) (or willingness to acquire by start of employment)
  • Paddle Canada Certification (or willingness to acquire by start of employment)
  • Willingness to acquire Waterfront Lifeguard certification (Kamp Kiwanis will assist with finding a course)
  • Minimum 1 season of experience working with youth in an overnight setting is required (i.e. overnight summer camp, overnight educational programs, group homes, or equivalent)
  • Experience in educational, recreational, or other youth program in an outdoor setting is an asset
  • Canoeing experience is required
  • Working towards or completion of post-secondary education in child or youth care, education, kinesiology, outdoor pursuits, recreation, or a related field is preferred.
  • Any additional certifications are an asset and may include but are not limited to: Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) Field Leader (Hiking) certification, Wilderness First Aid (40 Hour)
