Position Summary
The Deputy CEO Group consists of five Units: Centrelink Strategies, Flagship Reporting, Suicide & Self-harm
Monitoring, and the recently created Mental Health Analytics and Reporting Service (MHARS) and Mental
Health Information & Evidence Refinement and Validation (MHINERVA) Units. The mental health work
program is undertaken by two discrete but closely linked mental health units.
We are seeking to fill multiple APS 5 Data Analyst roles across the two mental health units at the Deputy CEO
Group.
The Mental Health Information and Evidence Refinement and Validation Unit (MHINERVA) Unit is responsible
for the AIHW’s work program to improve the broader mental health evidence base (excepting work on
perinatal mental health). Major deliverables for the unit include delivery of key performance indicators and
the data development work program under the National Agreement; establishment of an enduring mental
health linked data asset; and management of the Mental Health Services Activity Monitoring System and the
health community, residential and expenditure data collections.
The Mental Health Analytics and Reporting Service (MHARS) Unit leads AIHW’s mental health analysis and
reporting. Major deliverables for the unit include the Mental Health Online Report (MHOR) web site which
provides the most up-to-date information about the activity and characteristics of Australia's mental health-
related services, their usage and the resources required to run them. MHARS is also the custodian of the
national mental health outcomes, experience, and safety data collections.
The successful candidates will contribute to a selection of the following functions:
- Work with data and large databases, including data management, validation and processing
- Undertake research and statistical analysis using a range of software (including SAS, Tableau
- Contribute to the development of indicator specifications
- Present information in various formats, including data visualisations primarily using Tableau
- Manage users accessing secure data portals
- Data system administration including data governance, testing, output vetting and releasing of
- Prepare written content for the MHOR.
- Planning, organising, and managing projects
- Liaising and negotiating with internal and external stakeholders including government agencies,
Selection Criteria
Our ideal candidate will have most or all of the following skills and knowledge:
1. Well-developed conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to investigate and interrogate
administrative and other data sets.
2. Well-developed data visualisation skills, including the ability to clearly present information using
Tableau.
3. Well-developed research and writing skills, including the ability to synthesise information from a
range of sources to produce high quality written work in a range of formats (e.g. print and web).
4. Experience with statistical programming, or the management and administration of data systems,
using a range of software, including SAS, Tableau Prep, Python, SQL, R, or other relevant software.
5. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively within a
team and with external stakeholders.
qualifications or relevant work experience in statistics, epidemiology, demography, science communication
and journalism, database administration, data science, health informatics, economics, actuarial studies,
accounting, health sciences, social sciences, data mining, predictive modelling or geospatial/GIS (geographic
information system) mapping.
Tertiary qualifications in a relevant data, health, or welfare discipline, or previous experience in a role
involving data management and development, collation, or research analysis and reporting will be highly
regarded.
