This position plays a vital role in strengthening the department’s engagement with key stakeholders while enhancing the student experience through well-executed programming and communications. The coordinator serves as an essential bridge between students, corporate partners, alumni, and departmental initiatives.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Computer Science is one of 16 science departments and curricula in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is a major research department with more than 30 tenured/tenure track faculty, nine teaching track faculty, 12 research faculty, and 17 adjunct faculty, who serve more than a thousand undergraduate students and hundreds of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Teaching and research activities are currently assisted by nearly 200 graduate students and eight EHRA non-faculty. Twenty-four SHRA positions, including technical and administrative personnel, support the infrastructure of the department. Our driving research ideal is collaboration as it has been since the founding of our department in 1964. We believe that computer science’s greatest purpose is in working with other scientists to solve problems in their own disciplines. Therefore, we actively seek opportunities to generate new research with our colleagues and with scientists in other departments across campus, including in science, medicine, and the humanities. Numerous computer science faculty members have adjunct or joint appointments in other departments, lead large interdisciplinary research groups, and collaborate with colleagues from multiple universities across the Research Triangle, the United States, and even the world.

Position Summary

The Administrative Support Specialist is directly responsible for developing and executing strategic events and programs that support the department’s teaching and research mission, fundraising initiatives, alumni engagement, and outreach to external partners. The role collaborates with cross-university units (Admissions, University Career Services, the Arts & Sciences Foundation, and Corporate & Foundation Relations) and external partners (Industry and Peer Institutions) to enhance existing programs and develop new strategies for program management, planning, execution, and analysis. The role is essential to maintain the visibility for the department and service to its students and faculty and requires an autonomous level of program management skills.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Proven experience in event and project management. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to work well with a diverse range of people, including students, staff, faculty, and corporate partners.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Experience working at UNC or university setting Graphic design experience.
