Job overview
The following information is furnished to assist staff in understanding and appreciating the work content of their posts and the role they are to play in the organisation. However, the following points should be noted.
  • Whilst every endeavour has been made to outline all the duties and responsibilities of the post, a document such as this does not permit every item to be specified in detail. Broad headings, therefore, may have been used below, in which case all the usual associated routines are naturally included in the job description.
  • Staff should not refuse to undertake work not specified on this form, but they should record any additional duties they are required to perform, which will be taken into account when salaries are reviewed.

Purpose of the Role

To deliver engaging, practical lessons in animal care and land-based studies to pupils with SEMH needs and those permanently excluded from mainstream education. The role includes responsibility for the welfare of farm animals on-site and using animal care as a medium to improve pupils’ emotional well-being, resilience, and engagement in education.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning
  • Plan and deliver tailored lessons in animal care and land-based studies that cater to the needs of pupils with SEMH and behavioural challenges.
  • Provide hands-on, practical learning experiences, fostering engagement and personal development.
  • Differentiate teaching strategies to accommodate diverse abilities and learning styles.
  • Encourage pupils to develop responsibility, teamwork, and life skills through the care of animals.
  • Support pupils in working towards qualifications or accreditations in animal care or land-based subjects.

Animal Welfare

  • Ensure all animals' health, welfare, and safety on-site, including feeding, cleaning, monitoring, and veterinary care as required.
  • Maintain detailed records of animal health and welfare.
  • Develop and implement care routines that align with industry standards and best practices.
  • Engage pupils in daily animal care tasks, teaching them about ethical treatment and responsibility.

Pastoral Support

  • Build positive relationships with pupils, acting as role models and mentors to support their social and emotional development.
  • Use animal care as a therapeutic tool to improve pupils’ confidence, behaviour, and engagement.
  • Support pupils in managing their emotions and behaviours within a safe and nurturing environment.

Site Maintenance and Development

  • Oversee the upkeep of animal enclosures, land, and related facilities to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Plan and implement improvements to the animal care environment in collaboration with pupils.
  • Ensure equipment and tools are maintained, safe, and used appropriately by staff and pupils.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, support workers, and external professionals to provide holistic support for pupils.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/carers about pupil progress and participation in animal care activities.
  • Liaise with external organisations, such as veterinary services or animal welfare groups, as required.

Safeguarding and Health & Safety

  • Ensure all activities comply with safeguarding and health & safety regulations.
  • Conduct risk assessments for animal care and land-based activities.
  • Supervise pupils during practical activities, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications and Experience:
  • Teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, Cert Ed, or equivalent) or significant teaching experience in a land-based or practical setting.
  • Experience working with pupils with SEMH needs or those excluded from mainstream education.
  • Knowledge of animal care and welfare, ideally with experience in managing farm animals.
  • Strong understanding of the therapeutic benefits of animal care for young people.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Ability to build positive relationships with pupils who may display challenging behaviour.
  • Flexible, creative, and patient approach to teaching and engagement.
  • Excellent organisational skills to manage both teaching and animal care responsibilities.
  • Practical skills in land-based work, animal husbandry, and maintenance.

Desirable:

  • Accreditation in animal care or land-based studies.
  • Experience delivering qualifications in animal care or related subjects.
  • Knowledge of horticulture or complementary land-based activities.

Outcomes and Impact

  • Pupils develop skills in animal care, responsibility, and teamwork.
  • Improved emotional well-being and engagement in education for pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Safe and thriving animal environment that supports learning and therapeutic outcomes.
This role offers a unique opportunity to inspire and support pupils through meaningful, hands-on animal care experiences, promoting academic and personal growth.
