Context:
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Newsroom in the Department of Media and
Communications (DMC) and in close coordination with thematic and regional teams, the
Communications Officer (Climate Action) will provide creative and technical support for IOM’s
efforts to raise awareness on climate migration and human-mobility, environmental challenges,
and IOM’s climate action initiatives. This position involves assisting with the creation of
engaging content, coordinating campaigns, and helping to build public support for climate action
efforts in alignment with IOM’s strategic objectives on environmental sustainability and migration
resilience.
1. Assist in developing and implementing communication strategies and campaigns focused on
climate migration and human mobility, environmental challenges, and IOM’s climate action
priorities.
2. Participate in creating and distribute approved high-quality content such as press releases,
social media posts, articles, reports, and multimedia materials that communicate IOM’s role and
achievements in climate action.
3. Work closely with the digital media team to produce content tailored to various audiences,
including the general public, stakeholders, and climate-focused partners, checking that
messaging is consistent with IOM’s strategic goals.
4. Engage with stakeholders, including climate experts, government partners, UN agencies, and
NGOs, to help build awareness and support for IOM’s climate initiatives, conferences and
events.
5. Provide administrative, logistical and/or technical support for the organization of public
events, webinars, and presentations on climate-related issues, contributing to IOM’s presence in
global climate discussions.
6. Collaborate closely with IOM’s regional and field offices to adapt messaging and campaign
materials to regional contexts, facilitating effective local engagement and alignment with global
climate action efforts.
7. Coordinate social media and digital content related to climate action, facilitating timely,
accurate, and impactful communication.
8. Contribute to the development and implementation of digital campaigns to raise awareness of
climate migration issues, collaborating closely with internal and external partners to help amplify
campaign reach and engagement.
9. Track and analyze digital metrics, drafting regular reports on engagement and impact to help
guide future strategy and optimize messaging.
10. Provide guidance and information to support field colleagues on climate communication
approaches, sharing resources, templates, and best practices to help strengthen IOM’s climate
action communications.
11. Participate in training sessions and workshops, contributing to the capacity building of IOM
staff and partners in climate and environment communication.
12. Perform such other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
- Master’s degree in Communications, Environmental Studies, International Relations,
professional experience; or,
- University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience in communication, digital media, or environmental advocacy;
- Experience in content creation, communications strategy, or public advocacy, ideally with a
- Experience managing or coordinating social media channels, producing multimedia content,
- Prior experience working with international organizations or NGOs in communications is an
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex climate
- Proficiency in digital content creation and social media management tools (e.g., Adobe
- Knowledge of climate and environmental issues, including climate-induced migration and
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be
fluent in one of the three languages.
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another
official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process,
which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Competencies will be assessed during a competency-based interview.
Other:
Internationally recruited professional staff are required to be mobile.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment,
accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and background verification and security
clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be
required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the
medical clearance process.
