The Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) group at MAX IV operates two beamlines: Bio MAX and Micro MAX. Bio MAX that started user operation in 2017 is a highly versatile state-of-the-art beamline, geared towards high-throughput protein crystallography and automated experiments. Bio MAX can handle most conventional MX experiments, room temperature data collection and Synchrotron Serial Crystallography (SSX). Micro MAX that recently started user operation is optimized for microfocus applications and SSX for the study of protein dynamics. The MX group also operates Frag MAX, a platform for crystallographic fragment screening. The international and interdisciplinary MX group consists of around 15 persons.

MAX IV are looking for a postdoctoral scientist who enjoys working in an international and creative environment to join the Bio MAX beamline team. You will be involved in an in-house research project to develop automated data collection and processing facilities at Bio MAX, with an emphasis on handling multiple crystal experiments, especially for room temperature experiments (for example, fixed target Synchrotron Serial Crystallography, or in-situ data collection). This will involve designing strategies for data collection, developing and implementing pipelines for processing and merging several partial data sets and using these tools to obtain full data sets that can be used for structure studies. User support will be part of your activities. The MX environment will provide opportunities for collaborative work at the frontiers of the field.
Your main work tasks will be
- Participation in in-house method development research and internal and collaborative science projects in the field of macromolecular crystallography.
- Shared responsibilities for operation of Bio MAX and Micro MAX in close collaboration with the team of scientists and engineers of the MX group and MAX IV staff and the support (technical and scientific) of external users during their experimental beam time.
- Dissemination and education activities directed to MAX IV users and the wide MX community
To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications
- Ph D or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, or another field relevant to the beamline.
- Documented research activities using chemical or macromolecular crystallography, or of crystallography methods development. A good understanding of all the main steps in crystallography-based structure solution is important.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, but also the capacity to work independently.
- Good communication skills, and an excellent command of English, both oral and written.
Below are seen as merits
- Experience in operation and use of instrumentation for protein crystallography or related techniques at either synchrotrons or XFELs is a significant merit.
- Extensive practical experience and knowledge in the use of crystallographic software and data processing pipelines is a significant merit.
As a person you are creative and good at solving problems, quality conscious, able to work together with others but also independent and service minded.
Eligibility
Appointment to the position of postdoc requires that the applicant has a Ph D or an international degree deemed equivalent to a Ph D, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the application deadline. Under special circumstances the Ph D can have been completed previous to the aforementioned three years.
Further information
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment. A postdoctoral fellow is employed under a period
of at least two years and at most three years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor-2022-02-01” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow, 2022-02-01”)
