The Ocean Cleanup

Communications Manager

Rotterdam

FULL TIME

November 30, 2024

POSTED: 28/11/2024
STARTING DATE: As soon as possible
FULL TIME, ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS

MISSION TO METRICS
The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop technology to rid the world’s oceans and rivers of plastic, and to achieve this, we must effectively tell our story to a broad range of stakeholders.

Therefore, communications has a unique and central role to play within the organization. Our main task is to oversee the day-to-day management of one of our most important assets: our brand, driving funding, understanding, and engagement from stakeholders globally. We are looking for top talent to join us in this exciting and groundbreaking work to continuously uphold and improve our image, educate, inform, and drive positive action.

You will support this mission by facilitating media engagement to amplify the impact of our work. Reporting to the Head of Media and Communications, you will assist in strategically and effectively telling the innovative story of The Ocean Cleanup to key audiences. Working to performance metrics, these will include targeted international and national media, specialized outlets, commentators, partners, and advocates, alongside members of the scientific community.

“We are at an exciting stage in the development of our communications plans with a busy year ahead. We welcome the support of an experienced and creative communications manager to help the organization achieve our challenging goals to remove plastic from our oceans and rivers.” - Robin Clegg, Head of PR & Media

THE ASSIGNMENT
  • The Communications Manager works across the organization under the supervision and guidance of the Head of PR and Communications.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategic communications narratives on oceans, rivers and recycled catch that increase the visibility of the organization.
  • Work with colleagues to develop annual, quarterly and project-specific communications plans in support of the organization’s Objectives & Key Results (OKRs), defined priorities, objectives and measurements.
  • Regularly update the communications planning document.
  • Perform research and analysis using a variety of resources to develop appropriate messages and products.
  • Play a key role in executing a strategy that utilizes events and professional conferences to advance the organization's thought leadership among target audiences.
  • Identify and plan for presentation and media training requirements.
  • Write press releases, blog posts, and other relevant materials to communicate key organizational messages as required.
  • Build and maintain relationships with influential print, digital and broadcast media reporting on related issues and secure high-level coverage.
  • Help monitor coverage of the work of The Ocean Cleanup and its employees alongside relevant external digital and social media platform content with the support of media monitoring tools.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • Five years’ experience working in communications and media relations environments either in-house or in an agency.
  • Experience of developing and maintaining media contacts across national and international media outlets. Previous experience working with external media agencies an advantage.
  • Experience and cultural awareness of working in global environments preferable.

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Self-motivated, “can do” mentality.
  • Team spirited and collaborative.
  • Intrinsic motivation to work on our ambitious and meaningful goals.
  • A keen interest in environmental and general news related to The Ocean Cleanup’s mission.
  • Able to prioritize when managing many stakeholders’ top priorities.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS
  • Starting date: As soon as possible
  • Work permit: A valid European Union work permit is highly preferred for this position (the role is based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands).
  • Please note: because we are a non-profit, our salaries reflect that of an organization fully reliant on donations rather than that of a commercial entity. Conducting a pre-employment check is part of our recruitment process.
  • At The Ocean Cleanup, we believe we are stronger together, while harnessing the uniqueness each individual brings. That is why we take a fair, equal opportunity, and transparent approach to hiring and welcome special needs requests.
