Position Title : KREASI Climate Change in Education Specialist - External Collaborator
Background:
Climate change poses significant challenges for Indonesia, with increasing natural disasters, rising sea levels, and changing weather patterns that impact vulnerable communities. Indonesia ranks among the countries most affected by climate change, and children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences. The Indonesian government has recognized the need for comprehensive climate change adaptation strategies across sectors, including education. Schools have an essential role to play in raising awareness and equipping students with the knowledge and skills they need to mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts.
The KREASI (Kolaborasi untuk Edukasi Anak Indonesia) program, funded by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), is committed to integrating climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction into its core education program. This program focuses on four key pillars: Curriculum and Assessment, School Leadership, Teaching and Learning, and Child Protection. By embedding climate resilience into educational practices, KREASI aims to prepare Indonesia’s children to navigate a future increasingly defined by environmental challenges, ensuring they contribute to sustainable development and disaster preparedness at both the local and national levels.
To support this mission, the KREASI program is seeking an External Collaborator for Climate Change in Education to drive the integration of climate-related and environmental elements and strategies into the education system. This role will enhance the capacities of educators and local communities to build resilience and reduce risks associated with climate change.
Objectives:
The External Collaborator for Climate Change in Education will support the integration of climate resilience, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and sustainability into the educational system under the KREASI program. The collaborator will focus on ensuring that the education system is capacitated to equip children with the knowledge and skills needed to cope with climate-related risks and environmental changes. This will align with the four core areas of the KREASI program: Curriculum and Assessment, School Leadership, Teaching and Learning, and Child Protection.
Key Responsibilities:
Climate Change Integration across 4 Core Team Components of KREASI ( Curriculum, Teaching Practices, Education Leadership and Child Protection)
  • Design a comprehensive strategy for integrating climate change adaptation and environmental education across the four KREASI program pillars.
  • Collect, adapt, and create relevant content and tools to support schools and teachers in integrating climate adaptation into teaching and learning.
Piloting Climate Change Integration in Education in Targeted District
  • Lead technical aspect of piloting climate change integration in education in the targeted district
  • Collect evidence, document lessons learned, and assess outcomes of pilot implementation to inform future integration
Curriculum and Assessment
  • Collaborate with the Ministry of Education (including SEKNAS SPAB), Ministry of Religious Affairs, and other relevant stakeholders to adapt and enhance curriculum materials on climate change, environmental sustainability, comprehensive school safety framework (SPAB) and disaster risk preparedness for pre-schools and primary levels.
  • Support the development of teaching and learning resources that emphasize local and global climate issues affecting children and communities.
  • Develop a framework for assessing the integration of climate change and environmental sustainability in education systems with measurable outcomes.
District Leaders, School Leaders, Teacher Capacity Building
  • Enhance the capacity of district local government to integrate climate change resilience into education
  • Design and deliver training workshops for district-level government staff, teachers, school leadership teams, and protection committees (CBCP and TPPK) on how to incorporate climate change adaptation into policies and practices
  • Enhance understanding of local school leaders and protection on the impact of climate change on school safety and student well-being.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Conduct training sessions for local community ecosystems to empower community outreach initiatives focused on raising awareness of climate change adaptation and DRR through education.
  • Organize and facilitate community workshops in collaboration with local governments, and relevant stakeholders to promote a broader understanding of climate impacts and the role of education in building resilience.
Advocacy, Policy, Research Support
  • Create well-researched policy briefs and advocacy materials aimed to support and strengthen government policies for climate change adaptation within the education sector.
  • Facilitate collaboration among various actors particularly government and civil society stakeholders to influence climate adaptation policies at local and national levels.
  • Compile and document best practices and evidence of climate change integration in education to support advocacy and research purposes.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
  • Collaborate with the MEAL team to design monitoring tools to track progress in the implementation of climate change mainstreaming in education.
  • Conduct field visits to schools and communities to assess the effectiveness of climate adaptation mainstreaming, gathering data and insights, and compiling evaluation reports that include recommendations for further improvements and scaling them
Deliverables:
  • Climate Change Mainstreaming in Education Implementation Strategy Document : A comprehensive strategy document outlining the integration of climate change adaptation principles into the four core KREASI program areas.
  • Adaptation and Contextualise Climate Change Curriculum, Modules, Teaching and Learning Materials : Curriculum teaching and learning materials on climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability for pre-schools and primary schools, including climate change school program guidelines, lesson plans, and teacher guides.
  • Capacity Building Workshops
  • Advocacy Materials and Outreach Campaigns : Advocacy toolkits and multimedia materials (brochures, videos, social media content) designed and communicated to raise awareness on climate adaptation in schools and communities; Compilation of best practices of climate change action from targeted district.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation Framework
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Climate Change Education, Science Education, or a related field (Master's Degree is preferred).
  • At least 5 years of experience in climate adaptation, environmental education, or DRR in an education or development context.
  • Proven expertise in developing curriculum or training focused on climate change and disaster preparedness.
  • Strong knowledge of Indonesia’s education and environmental sectors, including key stakeholders and regulatory frameworks.
  • Working experience with Mo E and Mo RA is preferable
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and reporting skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
