HKUST is seeking a Research Engineer to take a central leadership role in a new five-year research project titled “Frontier and Human-centric AI and Robotics Technology for Geriatric Care”, set to start in 2025. The project aims to improve older individuals’ mental and physical care by developing human-centric frontier artificial intelligence and robotics technology, which will empower both the elderly themselves and their carers to manage health and address frailty.

The research engineer will lead an engineering team in charge of developing robotic and AI system prototypes that will be tested with stakeholders (e.g. the elderly, care workers and family members). These prototypes will integrate cutting edge technologies to be developed by the five research thrusts in the project: Human-centric benchmarking, Trustworthy generative AI, Robotics and embodied AI, Sustainability and Human robot interaction. In this role, the research engineer will be in close communication with not only the engineers and scientists within the research thrusts, but also with stakeholders, to define the specifications for these prototypes as well as their realization. The research engineer will also assist in the preparation of project deliverables, including reports, academic journal and conference papers, as well as in the organization of conferences, summits, seminars and workshops.

Applicants should have a Ph D degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field, with at least 5-7 years of relevant solid experience in areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence and robotics, and in research project management. The ideal candidate should be able to manage complex technical projects independently; lead technical teams; and possess good communication and presentation skills. A good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese (including Cantonese and Putonghua) would be very helpful. (Duration: 2 years)

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided. Housing benefits will also be provided where applicable. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
