Entry Requirements:

Candidates should –
(a) have completed Secondary 3, or equivalent;
(b) be able to communicate in Cantonese/Chinese and simple English;
(c) be able to read simple Chinese and simple English;
(d) be able to write simple Chinese or simple English;
(e) have at least one year’s relevant laboratory and field working experience; and
(f) have a pass result in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test (BLNST) (See Note (1)).

Note:

(1) All applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their knowledge of the Basic Law and National Security Law. A pass result in the BLNST is an entry requirement for all civil service jobs. Only those candidates who have passed the BLNST will be considered for appointment. For candidates who have not taken the relevant BLNST or have not attained a pass result in the relevant BLNST at the time of application, they may still apply for the job and arrangements will be made for them to take the relevant BLNST during the recruitment process.

(2) Candidates will be required to pass a relevant trade-cum-physical test.

Duties:

A Laboratory Attendant is mainly deployed on –

(a) assisting in and performing sampling, flow gauging and/or simple testing work in both the laboratory and in the field;
(b) assisting in samples collection and performing manual duties on the handling and transportation of instrument/equipment/samples to and from the laboratories and the field;
(c) assisting in keeping all laboratory and field equipment in good working order and clean condition;
(d) maintaining the laboratory and working areas in a clean and orderly condition; and
(e) allocating duties and supervising the work of subordinate staff.

(Note: A Laboratory Attendant may be required to conduct field work outdoors, including at remote and rugged areas as well as aboard vessels at sea; attend duties during typhoon and other emergencies; and work irregular hours and shifts, which can be outside normal working hours including evenings, weekends and public holidays.)

Terms of Appointment:

A new recruit will normally be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years. Upon passage of probation bar, he/she may be considered for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms.

(a) Candidates must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.

(i) Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions/Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply but their qualifications will be subject to assessment on equivalence with the required entry qualifications. (1) Application forms [G.F.340 (Rev. 7/2023)] are obtainable from any Home Affairs Enquiry Centres of District Offices, Home Affairs Department or any Job Centres of the Employment Services Division, Labour Department. The said form can also be downloaded from the Civil Service Bureau’s website (http://www.csb.gov.hk). The new version of application form for Government jobs G.F. 340 (Rev. 7/2023) has been in use with effect from 26 July 2023. Candidates who apply for Government jobs advertised on or after 26 July 2023 should use the new G.F. 340 (Rev. 7/2023). If candidates submit the old version form (G.F. 340 (Rev. 3/2013)), they will be required to fill in the new G.F. 340 (Rev. 7/2023) afresh and submit it within seven days upon request. If candidates fail to submit the new G.F. 340 (Rev. 7/2023) within the stipulated deadline, their applications will not be processed further.

(2) Completed application form together with copies of the supporting documents (a) academic qualifications (including graduation certificates or transcripts showing the attainment of Secondary 3, or equivalent); (b) employment records and detailed description of duties related to laboratory and field working experience; and (c) BLNST pass result, if applicable, should be submitted by post to the below contact address. The closing date for application is 13 December 2024. Application form submitted by fax or email will not be accepted.

(3) On-line application can also be made through the Civil Service Bureau’s website (http://www.csb.gov.hk) on or before 13 December 2024.

(4) To show that they meet the entry requirements for the post, all applicants (no matter making the application by post or on-line) should submit copies of the supporting documents (listed in paragraph 2 above) by post to the below contact address or by email (appointments@epd.gov.hk) on or before 20 December 2024. On-line applicants should also quote their “on-line application number” on the envelope and all copies of the supporting documents. If applicants fail to provide copies of the required supporting documents on or before 20 December 2024, their applications will be regarded as incomplete and will not be considered.

(5) Please specify “Application for the post of Laboratory Attendant” on the envelope. The postmark date on the envelope will be regarded as the date of submission of the application form and/or copies the supporting documents. To avoid delay or unsuccessful delivery of applications by post, please ensure that the correct address is clearly printed or written on the envelope and sufficient postage has been affixed before posting. Mail items bearing insufficient postage will not be delivered to this Department and will be returned to the sender or disposed of by the Hongkong Post, where appropriate. Applicants will have to bear any consequences arising from paying insufficient postage.

(6) Applications which are not made in the prescribed form, or incomplete, or late, or without copies of the required supporting documents, will not be considered.

(7) Applicants are required to provide their email addresses properly in the application forms. Applicants who are invited for the trade-cum-physical test and/or selection interview will normally receive an invitation by email in about 14 weeks from the closing date for application. As it takes time to process all applications, an invitation to the trade-cum-physical test and/or selection interview does not imply that an applicant has met the entry requirements of the post. Those who are not invited for the trade-cum-physical test and/or selection interview may assume that their applications are unsuccessful.
