About the Department of Home Affairs
The Department of Home Affairs is the Australian Government interior ministry with responsibilities for border control, immigration, refugees, citizenship, multicultural affairs, emergency management, transport security, cyber security policy and coordination, countering violent extremism programs and critical infrastructure protection.
Immigration Programs Division (IPD) sits under the Group Manager for Immigration Operations. IPD delivers the permanent migration and temporary visa programs to maximise the long-term economic and social benefits to Australia across the Skilled, Family and Refugee and Humanitarian visa programs as well as through Temporary entry to support tourism, education and international relations.
The Department of Home Affairs Ankara office consists of the Refugee and Humanitarian team, the Temporary Entry team and the Family team.
About the position
Under general direction, a Visa Processing Officer is responsible for assessing visa applications and determining outcomes.

What are selection criteria?
The purpose of selection criteria is to assist in making an objective decision about the most suitable candidates for the position. The selection criteria questions are designed to learn more about your knowledge, abilities, skills and personal attributes that are required for someone to be able to perform the position being advertised. This makes it easier to select the most highly qualified candidates.

A. Visa processing officers are required to work with legislation and policy to make decisions on subjective criteria. Please provide an example that demonsrtates you can apply critical thinking skills to make a subjective decision consistent with policy or legislation.
B. Visa processing officers are required to be highly organised with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet set processing targets. Please provide an example that demonstrated your ability to prioritise and balance a series of competing priorities in order to meet tight deadlines and achieve results.
C. Visa processing officers are required to work in a team where circumstances can change quickly. Provide an example of a time when you worked collaboratively within a team during a period of change or uncertainty towards a common goal.
D. Visa processing officers require excellent spoken and written communication skills. They must be able to prepare client correspondence, interview notes, assessment notes and be able to write decision records outlining the reasons a visa applicant has been refused a visa in English. Please give an example that demonstrates your ability to prepare somewhat complex correspondence and records in English.
E. Visa processing officers are required to process visa applications using several different systems and assess different types of visas with different legislative requirements. Please provide an example that demonstrates your ability to quickly adapt to new technology or quickly and efficiently learn new processes.

About the position
Under general direction, a Visa Processing Officer is responsible for assessing visa applications and determining outcomes.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Provide accurate, timely, consistent and appropriate information to visa applicants in accordance with relevant legislation and policy.
- Manage a caseload of visa applications and adhere to agreed assessment targets, timeframes and the Quality Assurance framework and benchmarks.
- Analyse various sources of information and determine the authenticity of visa applications and documents to make decisions, referring complex cases to senior staff.
- Identify and report integrity concerns and trends and participate in integrity support activities.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on operational matters and provide high-level client service.
- Record case notes and prepare correspondence including natural justice letters, requests for additional information and decision records.
- Prepare and undertake interviews with visa applicants.
- Use Home Affairs systems to process applications and record data, manage caseloads and conduct research, analysis and system checks.
- Contribute to the implementation of improved work practices.
Qualifications/Experience
Essential:
- An understanding of the Department’s visa and processing systems or a demonstrated ability to quickly learn new systems.
- The capacity to interpret and apply legislation and policy to support lawful decision making.
- Proven analytical, research and decision-making skills, including accuracy and attention to detail and the ability to identify integrity risks and trends.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English and Turkish.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel to analyse and interrogate data would be an advantage.
- Ability to set priorities and organise workloads to achieve outcomes and meet deadlines.
- High degree of personal drive and integrity with the ability to work flexibly and adapt to changing requirements.
- Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to perform under pressure, manage high work volumes and set priorities with a high degree of commitment and initiative.
- Applicants must be able to lawfully work and reside in Turkey
- Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or experience working in a similar visa processing role.
- Client service experience.
- Arabic, Dari or Farsi language skills.
