Job overview
We offer a dynamic teaching and learning environment for over 650 students from more than 55 different countries. The school is well established and is situated in a stunning campus with well-resourced facilities and an experienced teaching team.
The Director of Studies would be a suitably qualified teacher with some previous management or leadership experience, whether in the UK or internationally, and who may move on to Headship in the future. With our comprehensive professional development, mentoring and coaching programmes in place and supported by an experienced team, this role would be suitable for a candidate seeking a senior leadership role for the first time.
The successful applicant will take the lead on further developing the legacy of a culture of academic achievement and quality assurance and will play a key role in supporting students in their studies across all ability ranges and across all Key Stages in Secondary, working closely with parents.
The Director of Studies will report to the Head of Secondary but will be a key member of the whole-school Senior Leadership Team and will also play a developmental role in helping to develop the school’s future strategy, as well as working closely with other departments within the school.
We are committed to offering a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales. We have been awarded BSO status via the Independent Schools Inspectorate and are also an accredited member of COBIS, as well as being a COBIS Training School.
Bucharest is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city and Romania ranks highly in desirable countries to live in Europe, offering a safe environment, as well as a relatively inexpensive and yet high standard of living. There are opportunities nearby to ski and explore the countryside, as well as travel around the Balkans and Central Europe.
The Director of Studies will be keen to develop themselves professionally and personally, as well as encouraging and providing opportunities for others to do so. The ability to build and lead effective and harmonious teams, as well as possessing a high level of personal and professional administrative organisation will be essential, whilst in the process, developing personal leadership and developing and inspiring future leadership in others. The Director of Studies will work with drive, vision and a sense of purpose. Being internationally sympathetic and understanding of different cultures, the successful candidate will possess the innate ability to overcome obstacles with resilience and unassailable optimism. They will uphold the most positive attributes of what is means to be a senior leader in a successful and thriving British international school and being a role model for all staff members across the School by demonstrating strong ethical values in words and actions; that is, kind in words but strong in values.
We offer a competitive salary and attractive benefits including:
- Accommodation allowance
- Medical insurance
- Pension contribution
- Annual flight allowance
- Extensive CPD programme
BSB reserves the right to appoint before the closing date.
This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Employment is subject to references and a satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) or similar checks from both the country of origin and the previous country of employment.
About British School of Bucharest
The British School of Bucharest
lp our students prepare for the future workplace – for jobs that may not currently exist.
The school’s loyal and experienced native English-speaking teachers, working within a British-Curriculum school, plan practical, high-quality and child-centred lessons focused on active learning where a culture of mutual respect and support is valued along with high achievement.
In an ‘Era of Change’, we value highly the importance of working in partnership with our students to develop their independent thinking, to build their own learning pathways and to discover their passions, creativity and interests. The British School of Bucharest is the only British School in Romania rated as ‘excellent’ for both “the quality of pupils’ learning and achievements” and “the quality of pupils’ personal development”. For the British School of Bucharest, passion for excellence is a driving force each day and our students regularly win prizes in a broad range of international and local competitions.
The 2018 Independent School Inspectorate (ISI) report concludes that “The good progress of BSB students is a result of teaching that is well-planned and effectively delivered” and assesses the British School of Bucharest as “excellent” in educational quality. The key findings are that “the quality of pupils’ learning and achievement is excellent” and that “the quality of pupils’ personal development is excellent”. This is an outstanding result for the school, driven by our teachers and leadership team. The ISI report also makes clear that “Good behaviour in lessons results from motivating teaching which reflects teachers’ extensive subject knowledge and understanding of the pupils’ needs. Appropriate teaching methods lead to effective learning throughout the school”.
We pride ourselves in having created a school where every student is cared for, respected, treated equally and is a confident, motivated, active and enquiring contributor to our BSB family.
The British School of Bucharest is a COBIS Training School. The British School of Bucharest is registered as a Cambridge International School.
