Job overview
- Provide Counseling Services: Offer individual and group counseling sessions to students dealing with emotional, social, and behavioral challenges.
- Promote Mental Health Awareness: Educate students, staff, and parents about mental health, emotional well-being, and strategies for managing stress, anxiety, and other emotional difficulties.
- Support Students' Social Development: Help students develop healthy interpersonal skills, empathy, conflict resolution techniques, and positive relationships with peers and adults.
- Identify At-Risk Students: Assess students’ emotional and social needs, identifying those at risk of mental health issues or behavioral concerns, and intervene appropriately.
- Develop and Implement Support Plans: Work with students, teachers, and parents to create individualized social-emotional support plans that address specific needs and goals.
- Facilitate Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Programs: Lead or assist in the implementation of SEL programs, promoting skills such as self-awareness, self-regulation, decision-making, and responsible relationships.
- Provide Crisis Intervention: Respond to emotional crises, offering immediate support and connecting students to additional resources if necessary, such as external mental health services.
- Offer Peer Support and Mentoring Programs: Create or oversee peer mentoring and support groups that encourage positive social interactions and peer-led emotional support.
- Support Bullying Prevention and Intervention: Help identify and address bullying behaviors, facilitating programs and interventions that promote a safe and inclusive school environment.
- Collaborate with School Staff: Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other school staff to monitor student well-being, identify students in need of additional support, and provide strategies for addressing emotional and behavioral concerns in the classroom.
- Maintain Confidentiality: Ensure all counseling services are provided in a confidential manner, adhering to legal and ethical standards.
- Provide Parental Guidance: Offer counseling and guidance to parents on how to support their child’s social-emotional development, manage behavioral challenges, and address mental health concerns.
- Monitor and Track Student Progress: Keep accurate records of student progress, interventions, and outcomes, evaluating the effectiveness of counseling services and support plans.
- Promote a Positive School Climate: Contribute to creating a school environment that promotes respect, inclusion, and emotional well-being for all students.
- Develop and Lead Workshops: Organize and facilitate workshops for students, staff, and parents on topics such as coping strategies, stress management, emotional regulation, and healthy relationships.
- Stay Informed on Best Practices: Continuously seek professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in social-emotional learning, mental health counseling, and adolescent development.
