Financial Coordinator

The Financial Coordinator plays a pivotal role in supporting the financial operations and accounting-related areas at Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q). This position involves reviewing the financial operations of the NU-Q departments, primarily focusing on standard and routine tasks. The Financial Coordinator provides transactional oversight and applies industry and professional standards, university policies and procedures, as well as federal and state laws and regulations where applicable. Additionally, this role represents and guides the business area on internal and external financial matters by exchanging information. This position reports to the Director of Business & Finance.

Principal Accountabilities
Transactions
  • Provides review and oversight of all types of financial transactions, some of which may be complex regarding the size or duration of account.
  • Enters individual and/or summary transactions into journals, general ledgers, or other NU enterprise systems.
  • Reviews: ensures approval based on alternatives regarding practice & policy; analyzes and classifies transactions in accordance with established chart or coding of accounts; creates new accounts; prepares, processes, reconciles & provides receipts (as appropriate) for transactions.
  • Processes transfer &/or appropriation charges & may balance &/or close accounts.
  • Troubleshoots problems; performs vendor/account research as needed; obtains additional information from or provides instruction & guidance for customers/vendors; corrects or escalates.
  • Provides financial policy interpretation to determine the validity of customer requests & ensure compliance.
Grants &/or Awards
  • Provides assistance regarding grant financial administration such as preparing financial information for grant submission.
  • Approves expenditures on travel, consulting &/or equipment, along with various forms, such as Intra Institutional Vouchers, Requests for Accounting Corrections, the Research Assistant and Scholarship Appointments, &/or payroll adjustments, in accordance with granting agency guidelines & University policies & procedures.
Administration
  • Processes & presents data & information through the application of database, graphic & spreadsheet software.
  • Provides face-to-face and online customer support for financial related queries related to procurement and student finance
  • Obtains data by downloading from enterprise system; develops and runs queries.
  • Performs general office support activities.
Training
  • Assists with training of new staff members.
  • Creates & provides financial training on practice, procedure, policy &/or laws & regulations to customers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major such as accounting, business administration, finance, or related OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • One year of financial, budgeting &/or preparing account reconciliations or financial statements along with financial analysis or other relevant experience.
Minimum Competencies
  • Excellent computer skills, including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software proficiency.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Familiarity with financial reporting.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's or higher degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or a related field.
  • Relevant experience in financial operations, budgeting, and financial analysis.
Preferred Competencies:
  • Strong skills in using spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
  • Familiarity with financial reporting and the ability to interpret financial policies.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot financial issues.
  • Effective communication skills for providing financial training and guidance.


Target hiring range for this position will be between $51,346 -$64,473 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
