Description

This is a supervisory position assisting on deck with the maintenance of the pool’s filtration system, supervising lifeguards, and managing guests. Responsibilities include assisting in the daily operation and maintenance of the Aquatic Center while maintaining an environment healthy and safe for public use. May assist in the coordination of all lifeguard duties by assisting lifeguards.

Examples of Duties

  • Enforces pool rules and regulations.

  • Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and proper function of the facility.

  • Trains and receives proper Red Cross Lifeguard certifications.

  • Cleans grounds, locker rooms, and office.

  • Provides patrons with information and assistance.

  • Maintain the health and safety of all users of the facilities and all employees.

  • Assist in supervising the polite enforcement of rules, regulations, and policies to all guests, groups, and organizations.

  • Supervise the operational duties of staff.

  • Will serve as a lifeguard or act as lifeguard trainer when needed.

  • May perform professional rescuer duties as needed including CPR, First Aid, and Advanced rescues.

  • May assist in the delivery of aquatic programs and special events.

  • May assume the duties of any staff person in their absence.

  • Ensures facility opens and closes according to posted schedule.

  • Performs related duties.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding and Lifeguard Management certifications.

  • Must be 16 years of age at the time of employment.

  • Must have 1 year or 300 hours of experience with the City and currently in good standing.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of pool safety guidelines.

  • Knowledge of water rescue techniques.

  • Knowledge of pool maintenance and safe operation standards.

  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.

  • Skill in the provision of water rescue services.

  • Skill in the completion of reports.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Aquatics Specialist assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, Red Cross guidelines, and the employee handbook. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related lifeguarding duties. The need to respond to emergency incidents contributes to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to perform lifeguarding duties at a public pool. Success in this position contributes to the safety of patrons.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the general public.

  • Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, or to resolve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed in an outdoor aquatic facility. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

  • The work is typically performed in an aquatic facility. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work may be performed outdoors in cold or inclement weather. Work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

Supervises schedules for all pool personnel to ensure duties are performed as assigned by the Aquatics Specialist. Checks that pool staff are in proper attire. Supervises activities of patrons in and around the facility on a daily basis.
