Casual On-Call Technician - Scion

The Role
An awesome opening is available for an 8-week fixed-term casual experienced wildfire Technician to join our multi-disciplined Ecology and Environment Research Group in February 2025. You will support the Fire and Atmospheric Sciences Team with the upcoming burns season where you will contribute to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) Extreme Wildfire Research burns by assisting with experimental and prescribed burns, extinguishment, and fire escape mitigation. Drawing on your strong motivation and organisational skills you will assist with research burn preparation by performing fieldwork and sampling, data collection, instrumentation setup, and you will act as the primary contact with landowners during burn.
You will work in a rural field environment with the opportunity frequently travel to Darfield where you will work collaboratively within the team and with related program partners. If you have experience with scientific research, the ability to maintain field and laboratory equipment, a passion for working outdoors, with a strong focus on health and safety you will be the perfect addition to our team.
Requirements
- Current full NZ Driver's license
- Previous burning experience, with at least 5+ years of operational wildfire firefighting
- Willingness to travel
- Knowledge of incident management structure (CIMS4) advantageous
- Fireground-qualified and experienced in prescribed burn operations
- Rural fire certifications or education advantageous
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including stakeholder engagement
- Capability to work independently and within teams
