Job Description
Basic Function
To operate as part of a team in the development & delivery of theory & practicals, specifically in the area of agricultural mechanisation for a range of full-time and part-time agricultural courses.
Background:
Clonakilty Agricultural College, located 3 miles from the picturesque town of Clonakilty in West Cork was established in 1905 and has become renowned as a center of excellence, over the past 100 years, for the provision of agricultural training. Our location which is set amongst some of the most intensively farmed areas of southern Ireland, makes it a perfect backdrop for agricultural education. Clonakilty Agricultural College is one of three Teagasc colleges providing agricultural education in Ireland. It is responsible for the provision of full time and part time agricultural education in the Southern region. It provides QQI courses in agriculture from level 5 up to level 8. The college carries out its function in collaboration with the Munster Technological University, the Cork East and Cork West Area Management Units in Teagasc and the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences in University College Cork. It has 23 staff working across its education and research functions and educates in the region of 450 students each year.
Job Objectives
- Course Coordinator of the Advanced Certificate in Agriculture Level 6 - mechanisation stream.
- Preparation and delivery of classroom lectures in the areas of machinery, mechanisation & other agricultural related modules.
- Delivery of practical skills instruction and the assessment of these skills in all areas of agriculture with a specialisation in machinery.
- Provision of tutorials to students on class work and practicals related to their chosen course
- Preparation of assessment papers in accordance with QQI guidelines.
- Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety & welfare of themselves, fellow staff & non-Teagasc staff & co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
- Supporting students at all stages of their course.
- Assisting with schools and career open days in order to market the courses and give guidance on likely job opportunities for both school leavers and mature students.
- To maintain a high profile for the agricultural college through activities; local, regional and national events, publications and public relations.
- Support Teagasc Education Resource Leadership Teams, support the development and updating of curriculum and teaching support materials.
- Liaising with relevant internal and external stakeholders
- Assist in the implementation of new and revised education programmes including apprenticeship training.
- Contribute to the evaluation of Teagasc education programmes, including education productivity analysis, stakeholder satisfaction and Whole College Evaluation.
- To participate in the annual business planning and risk management process for the College
- To assist management and administrative staff in achieving good governance and risk management through co-operation and adherence to administrative procedures and practices.
- To work ‘out of hours’ when needed
- Managing health, safety & welfare of students
- Correcting, recording, verifying and informing students of their progress in the assessment system
- Provision of material for practicals, open days, in-service training & educational exhibits
- Implementing quality assurance including internal verification
- Assist in the management of the machinery enterprise & leading the adoption of up to date technology & precision farming in the college
- Keeping abreast of current concepts & using effective teaching methods to impart this knowledge to the students
- To maintain responsibility for own development and updating through active participation in PMDS.
- To assist management and administrative staff in achieving good governance and risk management through co-operation and adherence to administrative procedures and practices.
- To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
- Take responsibility for the marketing of services and contract with clients consistent with the achievement of the area income targets.
- Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
- Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Skills Requirement
- A Level 8 Degree (as recognised on the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent), in Agricultural Science or Agricultural Mechanisation, Agricultural Engineering or equivalent.
- Relevant machinery and/or fabrication qualification
- Operation of large scale farm machinery across the arable and livestock sectors ***
- Strong IT skills
- Excellent communication skills and experience of collaborating with stakeholders
- Excellent organisational skills
- Team work and leadership abilities
- Quality and customer service focus
- Practical knowledge of agriculture and the agricultural machinery sector
- Practical knowledge of the principles of agricultural mechanisation/agricultural mechanics/agricultural engineering.
- Practical knowledge of technology advances and precision farming
- Solid understanding and appreciation of the role of Agriculture in the Irish economy
- Machinery practical skills instruction experience
- Farm business planning and or machinery/fleet investment and management
- Teagasc education system
- QQI quality assurance procedures
- Excellent analysis, problem solving skills and decision support abilities
- Excellent communicator and experience collaborating with stakeholders.
- Work and project organisation which shows pro-activity and drive

- Candidates must satisfy and continue to satisfy during employment with Teagasc, legal requirements to drive a car unaccompanied on Irish public roads.
- NOTE: The ability to instruct learners in the operation of large scale farm machinery is an essential requirement for the role. Applicants may be asked to demonstrate evidence of having adequate competency in this area as part of the selection process.
