Assistant House Leader (Supervisor-Child Care)

POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the House Leader, Child Care Services – Child Support Unit this position is accountable to take a lead-hand role in the TCOC home and attend to the care and well-being of the children during the assigned shift. Responsibilities include ensuring the home is operating in a safe, efficient and effective manner and that children are provided with appropriate care and attention
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assumes responsibility for supervising the activities of the staff on site during the assigned shift.
Ensures all programming, appointments, medications, visits, reminders and any other matters relating to individual or collective child care needs are identified, recorded and initialed daily by self or others on duty.
Reviews the daily records/information from the previous shift and initializes.
Identifies age-appropriate activities/programming for the children in the home in support of their learning and growth (e.g. baking, planting/watering flowers, reading, games, etc) and ensures the active engagement of children through participation.
May arrange appointments and transport children if required (e.g. medical, dental, eye, hearing, counselling, pediatrician, immunizations); completes physician report. Ensures House Leader is advised accordingly
Prepares and serves meals based on the Canada Food Guide; ensures food handling and storage follows appropriate safety guidelines.
Ensures staff/child ratios are adhered to and, if not, immediately contacts others to schedule resources. Advises the House Leader of time and attendance/staffing issues accordingly.
Assists new staff with understanding their role/responsibilities; responds to questions from Child Care Providers and assists them in their duties
Facilitates and supports visits from family members in TCOC homes; establishes and maintains positive relationships with family members on behalf of the child(ren).
Handles injuries incurred by children and/or takes to the doctor/emergency or calls 911; completes an injury report and notifies the House Leader or Manager of Child Care Services – Child Support Unit immediately.
Completes required documentation for a staff member who may sustain an injury on the job and advises the House Leader accordingly.
Handles in-take process for children placed in the home, ensuring they are welcomed and their needs are met.
Identifies behavioral issues and responds appropriately ensuring the child, other children and staff are safe; calls crisis team members and/or the House Leader or Manager as deemed appropriate.
Ensures the House Leader is kept apprised of any issues, trends or opportunities that may impact the effective and efficient delivery of child care services; determines if issue requires escalation to the House Leader or Manager.
Attends OH&S Committee meetings and/or participates in OH&S related initiatives to ensure the safety of self, children and staff; performs preventative safety measures (e.g. safety storing cleaners, sharp objects, etc)
Assists with supporting learning/education needs of the child(ren).
Ensures the children’s personal care and hygiene are maintained.
Ensures the residence is maintained in good condition and cleaned/sanitized regularly and that the yard is also well-maintained (lawn mowed and watered regularly, snow shoveled, etc).
May be required to make purchases for the home or children; seeks pre-approval and submits receipts to the House Leader for refund.
Completes ad hoc and regular reports(e.g. in-home visit reports, safety reports, daily log books, etc)
Maintains confidentiality and privacy of child/family information; ensures staff understand expectations.
Performs related duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
Formal Education - Completion of development/training/courses relevant to this role is a requirement (e.g. Early Childhood Education, crisis/risk management, etc)
Certifications/Training/Associations – CPR/First Aid is required. Individuals must attend required training upon commencement (e.g. OH&S, crisis intervention, etc).
Licenses – A valid driver’s license is necessary.
Experience – Three (3) years successful experience working with children of all ages who have behavioral issues, unique backgrounds and/or special needs
Knowledge – Knowledge of behavioral issues specific to children, underlying causes, and how to respond effectively Knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous history and culture Knowledge of OH&S regulations and safe working practices Knowledge of internal policies, procedures and protocols Knowledge of the Child Care Act, the Residential Services Manual and the Child Protection Services Manual
Skills – Computer skills (e.g. laptop, e-mail, MSOffice, databases (time and attendance tracking) Writing, spelling, grammar, sentence structure Attributes
