The Role
The Sea Power Centre - Australia is looking for an APS 6 Curator in Sydney, NSW.
The role involves being the manager of the Boatshed Heritage and Learning Centre on Garden Island and to support the removal project (scheduled to complete by the end of 2025) for the Naval Heritage Collection from Spectacle Island in Sydney Harbour.
As the full-time representative for the centres activities in Sydney, the successful applicant will also coordinate heritage displays across Navy bases in Sydney, in particular the Garden Island Defence Precinct, and enable stakeholder organisations who borrow from the collection to enhance their exhibitions in Sydney.
The role works closely with other curators across the country working for Navy and with the team establishing a Heritage Repository at Banksmeadow, NSW.
The APS 6 Curator will need to demonstrate experience in some or all areas relating to:
- Ability to effectively manage facilities and personnel.
- Developing and implementing plans for the conservation and exhibition of artefacts.
- Monitoring museum industry standards and trends and implement strategies for continuous improvement.
- Providing advice on complex information regarding the documentation and cataloguing of collection items and the acquisition and de-accession of collection items.
- Implementing collection management processes and ensuring accurate record keeping of collection information in accordance with Defence policies and procedures.
- Facilitating appropriate direction for the team by clearly communicating goals and objectives.
- Representing Defence and responding to requests for information from the public, external agencies and internal stakeholders.
- Designing and implementing solutions to issues impacting on the achievement of desired outcomes.
- Assessing and evaluating military history and heritage enquiries and provide feedback to public requests for information.
About our Team
Working to the Deputy Director Heritage Network you will be an integral part of a national team of history and heritage professionals, naval reservists and volunteers across the country.
This team is responsible for collecting, conserving, interpreting and exhibiting artefacts, which contribute to the ongoing education of our Navy and Defence people, as well as the Australian public.
The team works as part of the Sea Power Centre – Australia informing and educating audiences about the use of sea power in the Australian context.
Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, have high levels of administrative and organisational skill, excellent time management skills, and a background in exhibitions, curation, collection, heritage or museum management.
To succeed in this role, applicants will be required to demonstrate:
- Ability to work under limited direction, and collegially with a small diverse team, including coaching and supporting others to increase their museum knowledge.
- A sound understanding of good museum curatorial practice, including collection management systems, processes, and care for a variety of objects, or the ability to gain the understanding on the job.
- The ability to work with a team to research, plan and execute exhibitions that tell the story of the Royal Australian Navy to a wide variety of audiences.
- A well-developed understanding (or the ability to develop) of the legislative and best practice requirements of managing archival records and portable cultural heritage to Australian standards, and is able to provide advice to their team and others in the network on these issues.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills to assist in stakeholder management in Navy as well as with the Australian public.
- Administrative and financial experience that supports the activities of museums.
