Under minimal supervision, the Denver CARES RN Charge Nurse performs supervisory functions for professional nursing and supportive staff who provide clinical care to an acute, patient population withdrawing from substances and seeking therapeutic, residential treatment. Therapeutic communication skills, verbal de-escalation skills, and an understanding of the Behavioral Health Administration's statues for Withdrawal Management and ASAM Services are recommended. The Denver CARES RN Charge Nurse works in a 24/7 free-standing facility, in which independent decision making and the collaborative teamwork are required.Under general supervision, the RN Charge Nurse adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of professional nursing and performance, and the ANA Code of Ethics to provide care to all healthcare consumers. This position applies critical thinking, evidence-based practices, and clinical competence to collaborate with the health care team to promote excellence in healthcare consumer safety and quality outcomes. Utilizes the "Theory of Human Caring and Caritas in daily practice. "Jean Watson, Ph D, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, Founder/Director, Watson Caring Science Institute."
Essential Functions:
- Operations Management. Oversee department/unit for assigned shift employing clinical and managerial skills to care for patients while also providing guidance and leadership to other nurses who are working with patients including but not limited to preparing daily staffing assignments, mentoring staff, evaluating performance, facilitating patient flow, admissions, and discharges. (40%)
- Patient Assessment. Assess the needs of individuals, families and/or communities to identify potential health or safety problems, Instruct individuals and families on health education and disease prevention and after care. (20%)
- Treatment and Evaluation. Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care. Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity, develop and modify patient care plans as indicated by patient’s responses and conditions. Prepare patients for, and assist with examinations and treatments. (20%)
- Medication administration, documentation and reassessment. (10%)
- Monitor, record and report symptoms and changes in patient’s condition and vital signs. (10%)
Education:
- Associate's Degree Completion of a nursing education program that satisfies the licensing requirements of the Colorado State Board of Nursing for Registered Nurses. BSN preferred.
Work Experience:
- 1-3 years Two years of professional nursing experience. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
- 1-3 years Mental Health/Substance Use Disorder experience preferred
Licenses:
- BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required
- RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of techniques, methods, and competencies of clinical nursing practices.
- Knowledge of safety principles and infection control in the patient care environment.
- Knowledge of standards, policies, and procedures of Denver Health as they to pertain to nursing.
- Skill to properly use medical instruments and laboratory equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form.
- Ability to contribute to the development of nursing staff by identifying learning needs and assisting with those needs.
- Ability to ensure continuity of patient care by planning staff assignments, providing direct patient care and evaluating patient outcomes.
- Ability to apply nursing principles, practices, and techniques.
- Ability to assess patients' needs and to coordinate proper nursing care.
- Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations.
- Ability to immediately and independently address issues/problems as they occur with patients, staff, and visitors and to escalate appropriately.
- Ability to use computers and computer systems.
- Bilingual skills preferred.
