Trainee in Numerical Optimization of High Brightness Electron sources for FELs with the inclusion of intra-beam scattering

Your tasks

With the observation of intra-beam scattering (IBS) in the Swiss FEL injector and new understanding in how to model IBS, the question is whether for future electron sources do we need to rethink optimization process which generally aims to reduce the beam emittance and increase the peak current. This project will investigate the use of IBS in modelling of electron source, using the TW gun under development at PSI as an example, to understand whether there is a regime where the optimization process must consider IBS. For example, how the combined effect of IBS and beam size affects the slice energy spread in the waist of the emittance compensation scheme. During your trainee work you will be integrated into a small team to conduct numerical simulations of beam dynamics including IBS using existing tools.

Your profile

You are a student in engineering or physics, and you are at least in your penultimate year of undergraduate study (minimum 4 semesters)
You are interested and motivated in innovative accelerator technologies and beam dynamics
You have not yet completed your Master’s thesis
