Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Setting and Reporting Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015- 2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This internship is within the Global Platform Policy and Coordination Team in Geneva, Switzerland and will report to the Programme Management Officer in the team. The main duties are as follows: 1. Support the substantive preparations towards the 2025 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction • Support analysis and presentation of strategic information & guidance related to GP (in various formats) for both internal and external audiences. • Conduct mapping of emerging themes and trends from across session concept notes. • Support strategies for audience-engagement on GP topics in the run up to GP2025. • Support the coordination of the preparations for the 4 High Level Dialogues and 15 Thematic Sessions, as needed. 2. Support the drafting of the co-chair’s summary of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction • Background research on specific topics • Review of drafts documents and session concept notes • Attend and support the drafting team meetings • Support in drafting of specific sections of the outcome document
Qualifications/special skills
Education: Advanced University degree in international development, disaster risk reduction, environment, gender or another relevant field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship
