Context And Mission


The Computational Social Sciences and Humanities program envisions preparing the social sciences and humanities for the era of data, artificial intelligence (AI), and Exascale supercomputing. Our mission is to foster collaboration between social scientists and computer scientists, making high-performance computing (HPC) accessible to all researchers in the field. Through innovative approaches, we aim to apply social science research to contribute valuable insights for informed policymaking.

In our pursuit, we focus on a wide range of key societal research areas such as Population and Household changes, Democratic Quality, Social Media, Public Opinion and Political Communication, Equity and Welfare in Education and Labor Market, legal systems and Legislation, Social-Ecology, Science of Science, and History, Archeology and Cultural Heritage. Employing a mixed of advanced statistical models, AI/Machine Learning, Large Language Models (LLMs), Agent-Based Modeling (ABM), Social Network Analysis (SNA), high-performance computational methods are applied to a wide range of large datasets from official statistics, surveys, social media, news, laws, historical archives, current data archives, archaeology data, citizens' volunteered and web-scraping data, and public administration and industry data.

We are searching for excellent candidates to develop realistic 3D and VR reconstructions of archaeological sites. These will include landscape, monumental architecture, terrain, objects, and animations. The candidate will participate in projects that involve archaeological site detection, 3D landscape analysis and recording of the sites and monuments. These projects aim at analysing, documenting, mapping and preserving cultural heritage.
The candidate will report directly to Dr. Hèctor A. Orengo, and ultimately to Dr Mercè Crosas, Head of the Computational Social Science and Humanities Programme at BSC.


Key Duties


  • Create realistic 3D and VR models for archaeological analysis, ensuring accuracy and high visual fidelity.
  • Develop photogrammetry models for digital reconstructions of archaeological sites and artifacts.
  • Support the dissemination and outreach efforts by sharing 3D models on open-source platforms (e.g., Sketchfab, Giravolt) and contributing to the creation of digital and online content to engage a broader audience.
  • Prepare models for 3D printing, ensuring they are optimized for physical reproduction.
  • Collaborate with team members, actively participating in discussions, offering new ideas, and contributing to the overall success of the project.
  • Engage in training activities to enhance skills and stay current with technological advancements in 3D modeling and archaeological visualization.


Requirements


  • Education
    • Degree in digital design, 3D design or similar.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Excellent knowledge of a variety of 3D and VR software (Blender, Maya, Unreal Engine/Unity)
    • Experience in developing realistic 3D/VR models
    • Knowledge of archaeology and its application in digital design and 3D modeling
    • Excellent writing and communication skills in English
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience with photogrammetry techniques and tools
    • Experience with online platforms for sharing 3D models and content in an open-source environment (e.g. Sketchfab).
    • Proficiency in Photogrammetry tools (e.g., Metashape, Alicevision, Reality Scan)
    • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator.
    • Experience in Concept art and asset creation, as well as hard Surface Modeling, texture design, and digital lighting
    • Knowledge in Rendering, UV mapping, and motion graphics
    • Animation and video editing skills
  • Competences
    • Attention to detail in recreating archaeological landscapes, objects, and architectural features accurately in 3D/VR environments.
    • Creative problem-solving skills to develop innovative solutions for visualizing complex archaeological data.
    • Effective communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary international teams.
    • Project-management skills for coordinating the development, documentation, and sharing of 3D models in open-source platforms.
    • Proactive approach to training and self-improvement, willing to engage in training activities to stay updated with new technologies and methodologies.


Conditions


  • The position will be located at BSC within the Directors Department
  • We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Starting date: asap
