Corporate Legal Counsel

We are seeking a Corporate Legal Counsel fluent in Korean at Seoul office. Are you ready to take on a challenging role that will put your legal expertise to the test? As our newest team member, you'll be responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice on a range of topics, including sales, marketing, distribution, procurement, real estate, and labour law matters in Korea. In your new role you will:
-
Primarily responsible for agreements and legal advice/consultation in the following scope of legal topics in Korea:
- sales, marketing and distribution – for specific assigned contracts/business divisions/customer market segments;
- procurement;
- real estate (e.g. leases);
- corporate secretarial matters; and
- labour law

Support Compliance-related topics for Korea, including:
- advising on and supporting effective conformance to Compliance-relevant laws (including anti-trust, anti-corruption, unfair trade practices topics) and Corporate Rules/guidelines (including Business Conduct Guidelines, Corporate Governance Principles, asset protection, data protection, export control);
- supporting Compliance-related questions (e.g. investigation/disciplinary processes in the event of violation of laws or Corporate Rules/ guidelines), as assigned;
- supporting the Local Compliance Contact/Regional Compliance Officer in any Compliance-related topics, as assigned;
- providing Compliance training in Korean language
- Provide support for the scope of legal topics above for other jurisdictions in the Asia-Pacific region, as assigned. The Asia-Pacific region (“AP region”) comprises Australia, India, South Korea and South-East Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam)
- Provide occasional support in other areas of law such as intellectual property, data protection, mergers & acquisitions/joint ventures in the AP region, as assigned
- Provide legal training in Korean language to relevant business stakeholders on a variety of legal topics This position includes Short-term Assignment to Singapore of ~ 3 months (max 1 year if needed)
You are best equipped for this task if you have:
- Fully qualified lawyer in an Asian jurisdiction/US/UK, preferably who has passed the South Korean Bar examinations/professional qualification examinations
- Fluency in English and Korean (including drafting in both languages) is required.
- 8-10 years of relevant professional experience , of which at least 3 years must be in-house. Significant experience of working with Korean customers/suppliers/partners is required.
- Good understanding of commercially-related legal principles and concepts, and good standard of contract drafting skills and commercial negotiation skills are required. Must be able to organize and explain risk/liability concepts and issues, or statutory requirements, to business stakeholders. Working knowledge of compliance/antitrust and labour laws in Korea is also required. Knowledge/experience in other legal areas (eg. corporate secretarial, IP, litigation or M&A) is an advantage.
- Must have initiative, commercial acumen, and have a deep understanding of contractual/governance risks and concerns and be able to balance those with business needs and strategic decisions. Good analytical, client–oriented and communication skills will be an advantage. Able to handle medium to complex legal questions in commercial legal topics. Able to think creatively to provide pragmatic legal solutions to achieve business objectives. Able to influence or significantly contribute in thought leadership to governance and business risks and strategic decisions. Self-motivated and responsible worker, who is able to organise and prioritise work and respond within deadlines. Can anticipate risks and potential disputes, and attempts to resolve them independently with occasional guidance from manager, but also understands when to escalate problems and issues
