Job Summary:
The Senior Server Administrator will be responsible for managing and maintaining the server infrastructure supporting the South African courts' digital operations. This includes overseeing server installations, configurations, troubleshooting, security, and performance optimization. The ideal candidate will ensure that the server infrastructure is robust, secure, and highly available, providing essential IT support for court functions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Server Management and Maintenance
- Install, configure, and maintain physical and virtual servers, including Windows, Linux, and cloud-based servers.
- Monitor server health and performance, ensuring uptime and minimizing disruptions to critical court services.
- Perform routine system upgrades and patch management to maintain security compliance and optimal performance.
- Security and Compliance
- Implement security protocols, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and access controls, to protect against unauthorized access and data breaches.
- Ensure that all server environments comply with South African regulations and IT security policies, including the POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act).
- Conduct regular security audits, vulnerability assessments, and disaster recovery testing.
- Virtualization and Cloud Management
- Manage and support virtualized environments using technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V, and cloud platforms.
- Optimize and troubleshoot virtual machines, ensuring efficient resource allocation and scalability.
- Work with cloud solutions to integrate on-premises and cloud-based resources, ensuring smooth operations.
- Backup and Disaster Recovery
- Develop and manage backup solutions and disaster recovery plans, ensuring the continuity of court operations.
- Test recovery processes regularly and ensure data integrity and availability in case of system failure.
- Troubleshooting and Technical Support
- Provide advanced technical support for server-related issues, liaising with court staff and IT teams to resolve incidents promptly.
- Act as an escalation point for complex server issues, diagnosing problems quickly and implementing solutions.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain detailed documentation of server configurations, system changes, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Generate and review performance reports, identifying trends and recommending proactive solutions to improve server efficiency and reliability.
- Project Management and Collaboration
- Lead server-related projects, coordinating with IT teams and stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
- Collaborate with network administrators, database administrators, and application support teams to ensure cohesive infrastructure management.
- Capacity Planning and Optimization
- Assess current server usage and forecast future needs to support scalability and growth.
- Optimize server resource allocation, balancing performance and cost-effectiveness.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in server administration, with a strong focus on Windows and Linux environments.
- Certifications in server administration (e.g., MCSE, Comp TIA Server+, RHCSA) are preferred.
- Proficiency in server management tools and technologies such as Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, VMware, and Hyper-V.
- Experience with security protocols, firewalls, and network security.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
- Familiarity with South African regulations, such as POPIA, related to data protection and IT security.
- Experience working in a public sector or judiciary environment.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS.
- ITIL certification or knowledge of IT service management principles.
- High attention to detail and commitment to maintaining secure, reliable systems.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team to achieve departmental goals.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
