Professional Structural Engineer

PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for providing professional structural engineering services on projects within the Functional group and for providing assistance to the Function Manager/Section Manager/Senior Engineers and Professionals/Consultants in the successful delivery of multidisciplinary projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrate strong understanding of software tools, working independently with minimal supervision while producing high-quality deliverables.
Organize information effectively and communicate design intent clearly through software outputs.
Understand the principles of the design process and how it is translated into deliverables.
Grasp key project issues and how they influence your work.
Take ownership and responsibility for your work, ensuring timely completion.
Train technicians and junior staff.
Supervise and review the work of other team members.
Continuously improve design capabilities and output quality.
Draft technical reports that meet acceptable standards for both technical content and presentation quality.
Confidently present and represent your technical work.
Draft responses to straightforward bids, seeking assistance with commercial aspects as needed.
Develop knowledge of the commercial aspects of project management.
Identify and follow up on leads related to additional work opportunities.
Maintain regular client contact under the direction of a senior manager.
Check and inspect constructed works to ensure compliance with design and specifications.
Undertake monitoring and propose remedial actions when necessary.
Direct and manage project development from inception to completion.
Develop project scope and deliverables aligned with client business goals, in collaboration with all stakeholders.
Create full-scale project plans and associated communication documents.
Effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders.
Liaise with project stakeholders on an ongoing basis.
Estimate resources and participants needed to achieve project goals.
Assess the need for additional staff or consultants and determine appropriate measures.
Delegate tasks and responsibilities to the relevant personnel.
Identify and manage project dependencies and critical paths.
Track project milestones and deliverables.
Prepare and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations.
Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises, and develop contingency plans.
Coach, mentor, motivate, and supervise project team members, encouraging accountability and positive action in their assigned work.
Build, develop, and maintain business relationships essential for project success.
Conduct project reviews and prepare recommendations to identify both successful and unsuccessful project elements.
Submit Expressions of Interest (EOIs) and proposals.
Develop and maintain internal contacts within SMEC South Africa to source appropriate skills.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

B.Sc or B.Eng degree or B Tech degree
Professional registration.
Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in the relevant field.
Proven experience in bridge design and structural engineering.
Strong report writing skills with the ability to present complex information.
Excellent communication skills with a courteous, approach when interacting with stakeholders, promoting positive working relationships.
Collaborative and adaptable work style, with the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
