About the Role
We currently have an opening in our team for a Registered Nurse with a passion for Mental Health Nursing. In this full time role (40 hours per week) working a 4 on 4 off rotating 12 hour roster that provides 24 hour coverage based in Whangarei you will provide a single point of entry service for acute and non-acute referrals to the service as well as dedicated phone line support.
You will conduct preliminary assessments of whether a person is likely to have a mental illness or disorder, and the nature of urgency of the response required against the ratified Triage scale. We aim to reduce wait times and provide the best experience we can for whānau under our care.
About the Team/Service/ Location
Whangarei Acute Spectrum Specialist Services (W.A.S.S.S) is a group of community-based teams that provide acute specialist assessment and treatment for new and existing clients within Te Whatu Ora – Te Tai Tokerau Mental Health and Addictions service.

About you
Our ideal applicant must:
  • Be a registered comprehensive nurse or registered psychiatric nurse, with a current practicing certificate
  • Have Two years’ experience in acute and/or kaupapa led community mental health practice working with tāngata whaiora and their whānau living with the effects of mental illness in our community
  • Be a Duly Authorised Officer or be willing to work towards the same
  • Demonstrate a proven ability to communicate well with tāngata whaiora, their whānau and colleagues, and engage Māori in making choices that enhance their wellbeing
  • Hold a current drivers licence
  • A demonstrated commitment to continuing personal and professional development
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
  • Experience in projects / initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
