Pharmacy 5th Year Student | Appel Placement
We are now inviting applications for the above post for a 30-hour week over 4 days. The post would commence in line with the 5th year Appel calendar. Remuneration package and grade will be aligned with the first point of the pharmacy student HSE pay scales and prorated for a 30-hour working week
The duties of the position include:
General
  • Participation in the dispensing, supply and disposal of drugs, pharmaceuticals and other related items as may be required, including blister packing and extemporaneous preparation
  • Participation in the training structure and adherence to the specific procedures designed for Student Pharmacists.
  • Assisting in the day-to-day workflow in the pharmacy department
  • Participation in the storage and management of pharmacy stock at pharmacy and ward level including date control and stock rotation
  • Answering any pharmacy related queries from members of staff or public within the scope of practice and under the direct supervision of the pharmacist in charge.
  • Participation in the provision and development of a ward pharmacy service
  • Participation in stock take using scanners and bar codes
  • Participation in administrative duties e.g. filing and verifying prescriptions, generating end of day dispensed reports, end of month prescription procedures for PCRS
  • Participation in continuing education and educational activities consistent with the post.
  • Attendance and participation at regular team meetings.
  • Ensuring that personal duties are handed over to an appropriate staff member in the event of absences.
  • Familiarity and adherence with all policies and procedures relating to the practice of pharmacy in the BSH, Cork.
  • Performance of other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned by a pharmacist
Specialised Duties for Purchasing Department
  • Placing and receiving all orders
  • Counting stock for monthly bulk orders
  • Organisation and management of goods inwards e.g FMD, confirming delivery of medicines, putting away medicines in storage locations
  • Date checking of received stock
  • Managing Supplier authorisation license expiries
  • Any duties as assigned by the Senior Purchasing Technician
Clinical Pharmacy Service
  • Documentation of near misses
  • Discussion of any learning from near misses/ observed errors
  • Observation of the monitoring and promotion of effective drug use by pharmacists.
  • Observation of the annotation of drug charts and performance of appropriateness reviews by pharmacists
  • Observation of medication history reviews and reconciliations under the supervision and further review by a pharmacist. A medication history list can be documented by the student pharmacist under the supervision of a pharmacist
  • Observation of the monitoring of the appropriate use of antimicrobial medication in conjunction with the antimicrobial Pharmacist and the infection prevention and control team.
  • Observation of the provision of patient and family education and provision of same under the supervision of a pharmacist where applicable
  • Attendance at educational talks to patients and staff with a pharmacist e.g. Parkinson’s disease education
  • To assist with and participate in clinical audit being conducted by colleagues and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Attendance at Drugs and Therapeutics(D&T) meeting and presentation of any conducted audits
  • Participation in the development and updating of SOPs under the supervision of a pharmacist and presentation of same at D&T
  • Participation in the teaching and training of Pharmacy staff at journal clubs
  • Attendance at antimicrobial stewardship Committee with Antimicrobial Pharmacist
  • Observation of pharmacist interventions during a Warfarin Clinic
The ideal candidate will:
  • Be a student in 5th year Pharmacy in
  • University College Cork (UCC),
  • Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), and
  • Trinity College Dublin (Trinity).
  • Have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Be committed to quality improvement.
