Location: Budapest, Hungary
Duration: Academic Year (September-June), renewable
Working hours: Weekday mornings and evenings, Saturday morning and afternoon
Salary: hourly rate based on sliding pay scale
Role Context and Purpose
We are looking for freelance teachers to work with our academic and teaching teams in the delivery of lessons and services in Budapest Teaching Centre. Candidates should have a desire to work with a global leader in English teaching with access to professionally recognised training. A keen interest in working with young learners is desirable.
Budapest Teaching Centre (with over 20 teachers) delivers courses at all levels to both adults and children from 5 to 17 years old. Our adult courses are delivered from our main location in the city centre and our young learner courses from two off-site locations; one in Buda and one in Pest. We also have a small number of corporate clients, delivering courses both face to face and online.
There are two 16-week semesters and summer courses for young learners and three 12-week terms for adults. We run General English and Cambridge Exam courses on-site and have started to run online IELTS courses, which run throughout the year in collaboration with the British Council in Bratislava and Prague.
Responsibilities
- Independently Plan, prepare and deliver a pre-agreed number of hours of high-quality English language teaching. This could include both adult and young learners.
- Monitor progress based on your professional knowledge and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy.
- Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students’ needs, by actively working as a member of the teaching team.
- Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards.
- Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas: Child protection and adult safeguarding; Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion; Safety and Security.
A freelance teacher will be given one or more classes. They must be able to cover the full-term teaching schedule for this / these classes. For example, a class every Saturday at 9:00-12:15 for the full sixteen-week term. There will also be stand-by and long-term cover work available with the possibility of work in the summer.
Requirements
- Applicants must have the right to live and work in the EU. We are unable to secure work permits for non-EU nationals. This extends to British citizens post-Brexit.
- All applicants need to apply for a police check from their current and previous country of residence. This needs to be completed prior to post.
- Applicants’ teaching services will preferably be taken as outside contractors. In this case a copy of the official document issued by the EEA country of the residence of business of the applicant shall be attached to that application, that provides evidence that the applicant is able to carry out language teaching activity as a private entrepreneur , or on behalf of any other registered business.
Qualifications
Essential: First Degree (or equivalent); Cambridge CELTA/Trinity Cert TESOL (Core) or PGCE
Desirable: CELTYL or TYLEC; DELTA or Dip TEFL/TESOL (Higher); MA TESOL (or equivalent)
Skills
Essential: High proficiency in English i.e. CEFR level of C2/ IELTS Band 8+ in each of 4 sections of the academic module
Desirable: proficient in online delivery using Zoom or similar platforms
Experience
Essential: 2 years’ post-certificate (Cambridge CELTA/Trinity Cert TESOL) experience; Experience in teaching at least two of the relevant age groups:
- Primary Young Learners: 6 to 11 years old (200+ hours)
- Secondary Learners: 12 to 17 years old (200+ hours)
- Adults General English (400+ hours teaching class sizes of 4 or more)
Please be aware that 1 to 1 tuition will not be considered as relevant teaching experience.
