Doctoral Researcher in Silicic magmas in Precambrian ophiolites & modern divergent plate boundaries

The Faculty of Science invites applications for a
DOCTORAL RESEARCHER in Silicic magmas in Precambrian ophiolites and modern divergent plate boundaries starting in May 2025 or as agreed. The Doctoral Researcher will be offered a fully funded contract up to 3 years.

The position is part of the new Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) - Doctoral Network Flux BEATS dedicated global elemental fluxes that control biogeochemical cycles and ore formation at divergent plate boundaries. There will be a six-month trial period for the position.

Position description:

The position is related to the Flux BEATS doctoral network (https://www.fluxbeats.eu/) that integrates geological observations, cutting-edge geochemical and biogeochemical analyses, data and modeling from modern volcanic systems along mid-ocean ridges and back-arc spreading centers with Cretaceous ophiolites and Precambrian magmatic suites and associated hydrothermal systems.

This doctoral project (DC4) deals with the characteristics, melt evolution, and fluid fluxes of plagiogranite-ferrogabbro suites in Precambrian ophiolites with comparison to modern counterparts, in pursuit of models for silicic magma formation in oceanic environments through time. The candidate will gain expertise in whole-rock Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf and zircon U-Pb-Hf-O isotope geochemistry as well as fluid inclusion analysis. The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in fundamental research in high-temperature geochemistry and petrology, with a particular focus on advancing analytical techniques in geochemistry. The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is involved in the project, and research stays there are anticipated.

What we require:

We are looking for a motivated applicant with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in geosciences or associated field, proficient knowledge of English and motivation for mobility. Previous relevant experience and/or familiarity with different analytical methods, knowledge of local language and existing peer-reviewed publications are a merit.

According to the system of the University of Helsinki, all doctoral researchers belong to a doctoral programme. The successful candidate should apply to the Doctoral Programme in Geo Sciences (Geo Doc) and obtain the study right within the trial period of six months of their employment contract. MSCA mobility rule: Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (e.g., work, studies) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary (i.e. Finland) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. Successful applicants must relocate to the referred country by the time of employment.

The annual gross monthly salary will be 3125,38€ and mobility allowance 461,54€ per month following MSCA practices. The doctoral researcher may also be eligible for family allowance according to MSCA doctoral network practice.
