Regional Blood Transfusion Clinician

What you’ll do
- Participates in the operational planning, development, implementation and evaluation of sustainable standards and initiatives related to Transfusion Medicine clinical practice(s) throughout the organization through methods such as providing information based upon specialized transfusion theory/practice, developing communication linkages and advocating on behalf of the program.
- Coordinates the development and implementation of a Blood Transfusion Medicine Quality Management System; integrates and standardizes external processes and procedures related to the Laboratory Quality Management Systems utilizing process mapping techniques.
- Collaborates and maintains relationships with key stakeholders by facilitating committee meetings to develop and execute actions plans that address deficiencies and developing communications tools to ensure awareness of initiatives and practice changes related to Transfusion Medicine throughout the organization.
- Under the direction of the Transfusion Medicine Division Head, Transfusion Technical Practice Lead, and with relevant Nursing stakeholders, develops and maintains policies, procedures and guidelines related to the transfusion of blood products to meet relevant standards.
- Provides clinical support to Transfusion Medicine Services, the Regional Transfusion Medicine Division Head and Professional Practice related to Transfusion Medicine; attend to directives that enhance the quality of care and ensure safety of recipients, staff, blood and blood components.
- Coordinates transfusion related initiatives between nursing, medical, and technical staff.
- Coordinates, implements and audits protocols in appropriate clinical areas.
- Provides guidance in transfusion practice including nursing policy and procedures, education, competency maintenance and quality assurance for nursing transfusion programs.
- Participates in relevant programs and professional committees where nursing expertise related to transfusion issues is required. These include, but are not limited to program, network, professional practice, quality committee and the Laboratory Quality Council committees.
- Develops specialized education programs and develops and provides educational activities for nursing students, new nursing employees and established nurses to ensure competency in transfusion practice and coordinates educational initiatives related to safe transfusion practice and transfusion medicine.
- Under the direction of the Transfusion Medicine Division Head, Transfusion Technical Practice Lead, participates in approved nursing and interdisciplinary research and special projects related to transfusion practice. Participation may include study design, data collection, and data interpretation, information summary and reporting.
- Participates actively in regional and provincial nursing resource groups related to transfusion practice such as the Provincial Blood Coordinating Office's (PBCO) and Nursing Resource Group (NRG).
- Participates in incident/adverse event reporting and root cause analysis for Blood Transfusion Medicine, regularly reviews and reports all serious adverse events as required by regulation.
- Maintains and updates own knowledge by reviewing current literature and research, accessing educational opportunities, identifying and incorporating new theories/trends to ensure programs are current and reflective of “best practices”.
- Sets measurable goals and objectives within a team environment, incorporating the organization’s vision and values, goals and corporate plan.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).
- Five years' recent related experience within an acute care hospital including experience in blood transfusion practice.
- Comprehensive knowledge of evidence based nursing practice related to medical/surgical transfusion practices within a tertiary level teaching hospital.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of blood components/products and commitment to safe transfusion practice.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and influence internal and external stakeholders, provide advice, guidance and education and ensure compliance with standards.
- Demonstrated ability to foster effective working relationships that promote cooperative goal achievement and contribute to an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain current knowledge of new developments, trends and research in transfusion medicine and recommend/implement best practices
- Demonstrated ability to develop quality indicators in relation to clinical transfusion medicine practices and provide constructive reports based on the results.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare concise and accurate written reports and document procedures and processes for manuals using a variety of computer software applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point and Visio.
- Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Proficiency in intravenous therapy.
- Demonstrated ability to plan strategically, organize and implement programs, procedures and processes.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to teach, provide orientation, conducts presentations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to implement effective problem-solving processes.
- Broad knowledge of research processes and methodology.

Wage: $49.20 - $63.47 / Hour
