Duties
Conduct laboratory and greenhouse research aiming to 1) to characterize the nature of the interactions between the oomycete pathogen, Aphanomyces euteiches, and pathogenic Fusarium species that contribute to root rot of pulse crops and 2) investigate secondary metabolites produced by Fusarium species that may play a role in modulating host-pathogen-pathogen interactions.

Specific duties will include:
  • Designing experiments and preparing research protocols
  • Conducting inoculation experiments with multiple plant pathogens in the greenhouse
  • Collection of plant tissue samples, and perform DNA extractions and gene quantification assays
  • Soil sample collection, and processing and analysis for microbial DNA composition
  • Plant health assessments in greenhouse experiments
  • Data analyses and communication of results
Work environment
The student will be located at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre at Lethbridge, AB for research and part-time at the University of Saskatchewan (Plant Sciences Department) in Saskatoon, SK for course-work and where the collaborating scientists are located. Research will be conducted in the lab and greenhouse at Le RDC, with some field work needed for sample collection from field plots near Lethbridge.

Education:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a Doctoral program at the University of Saskatchewan with a specialization in plant pathology, biological sciences or plant sciences.

Degree equivalency
Experience:
Experience in microbiology research, such as culturing microorganisms and preparing media using sterile techniques.
Experience in molecular biology techniques, such as nucleic acid extractions and PCR assays.
