JOB OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Director, Cancer Information, the Information Designer is responsible for using research to provide content recommendations to develop complex cancer information. This role is the bridge between research and information design, and they will partner with members of the team to ensure insights translate into finished products.


WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
:

  • Complete research to gather user insights, journeys or to learn more about our audience’s information needs.
  • Determine the right research approach for the project and act as an advisor during project planning about what research is needed.
  • Complete environmental scans to gather user insights, journeys or to learn more about our audience’s information needs across the cancer control continuum.
  • Lead field research with our audiences (public, patients, survivors, caregivers) to understand their needs or to validate the clarity, accuracy and effectiveness of our knowledge products.
  • Lead, plan, facilitate and synthesize stakeholder workshops.
  • Interpret or use other sources, such as market research, user insights, user journeys, needs assessments, etc. to understand information needs.
  • Analyze existing cancer information content, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement.


  • Use research insights to provide design recommendations during the content development process.
  • Provide information briefs, including visual elements to project teams.
  • Propose designs for information, including recommendations on the format and visuals that help our audience understand and use cancer information.
  • Apply principles of user experience (UX) design and service design to help create intuitive and engaging content.
  • Contribute to the design or adaptation of cancer information for different audiences (for example, young adults, people with advanced cancer, non-English and non-French speaking people, etc.).
  • Manage team communications (presenting research insights, ideas, and designs to the team and other stakeholders).
  • Ensure that cancer information is accessible to diverse audiences, including those with varying literacy levels, cultural backgrounds and abilities.


  • Provide leadership and mentorship on information design processes and methods.
  • Advocate for information design research and support a culture of high-quality user research across the organization.
  • Drive strategic user research on fundamental questions that will help shape cancer information’s content strategy.
  • Stay up to date on developments in information design, user research and service design.


  • Make recommendations to the Director, Cancer Information to support content planning and priorities
  • Support content development and execution of content plan aligned with CCS’s organizational strategic plan that meets the content needs of the cancer information and policy teams.
  • Support funded projects by attending project meetings and gathering requirements for patient education.
  • Lead relationships with people with lived experience to provide feedback on early content designs, for example, video storyboards, infographics, etc.
  • Gather and analyze content performance to gain insight with the goal of informing future content decisions and to improve ROI for CCS.
  • Create feedback loop with Support Services, Digital and other teams for tracking and learning from content performance.
  • Contribute to our culture of justice, belonging, equity, diversity, and inclusion by ensuring that all staff feel represented and heard regardless of their gender, age, religion, ethnicity, and nationality or race.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary education in human-centered design, user experience design, psychology, cognitive science or a related field.
  • 5+ years professional experience using service design, experience design, plain language and design thinking methods.
  • An ability to work in and lead teams to deliver delightful and effective information products in complex environments.
  • Experience working in healthcare, oncology, or patient education is a plus.
  • Strong visual design fundamentals; we are looking for someone who appreciates and has the ability to communicate visually.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.
  • Be a dynamic and engaging facilitator, able to guide the attention of a room full of care providers or patients.
  • A passion for improving the patient and caregiver experience.
  • An enduring interest in strategy and good information design.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A people-centered and inclusive approach to content.
  • Project leadership experience is an asset.
