Working for the Faculty of Native Studies
Native Studies is an exciting, emerging area of study that seeks to understand the experiences and lives of Indigenous people and communities, past, present, and into the future. It also studies how Indigenous communities and the countries in which they live influence and define each other. The Faculty of Native Studies (FNS)’s vision is to produce a better society by educating Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to be responsible citizens through excellent community engagement, teaching and research focused on the complexity of Indigenous issues and thought. The FNS mission is to produce graduates across the university who have respect for Indigenous knowledge, who are educated about Indigenous histories and contemporary realities, and who can work collaboratively with Indigenous communities and people.
FNS delivers a variety of innovative, high-quality educational opportunities (undergraduate, graduate, certificate, continuing education) to benefit a wide range of learners at the local, national, and international levels. The Faculty is deepening its commitment to responsive and accessible learning by developing a centralized online and continuing education arm that will expand upon the existing student base to build enrollment from programs across the University, as well as professional and personal development learner audiences.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Online Learning and Strategy Lead, the General Administrator will contribute to the work in online and continuing education to ensure students are serviced in a welcoming, timely and accurate manner and have a seamless learning experience. This position will also provide general faculty administrative support to contribute to a variety of activities and projects as required, such as community engagement, student services and events, and communications. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence, produce high-quality work and contribute positively to the overall team effort.
Duties
Continuing Education Student Services
- Providing students with friendly and prompt assistance by monitoring the email address for registration questions and other general inquiries
- Moderating the suite of online continuing education offerings so that students receive clear communication, troubleshooting support, and the reputation of the faculty is upheld
- Assisting with e Class updates, course material edits and production support where appropriate for continuing education and undergraduate courses (training provided)
- Providing assistance with online program administration, such as reviewing course evaluations, event planning, and undertaking research to provide analysis and recommendations in order to maintain an effective program
- Other duties as required
- Supporting the Communications Partner with writing, social media, website maintenance, and a myriad of other communications responsibilities where required
- Providing assistance to the Vice-Dean and Community Engagement and Alumni Coordinator related to student events and community engagement initiatives
- Front desk and/or student services support as required
- Other duties as required
- Diploma in a related field preferred; may benefit from event planning education, office administration, etc; minimum Grade 12 education supplemented by post-secondary coursework in office administration or relevant customer service experience
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with proven ability to adhere to deadlines
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve, assess a situation, mitigate risk, apply judgment, and adapt and respond accordingly
- Experience working with Indigenous students and working with Indigenous Community partners
- Proficiency with Google applications
- Working knowledge and experience with FOIP and confidentiality principles
- Knowledge and experience with Uof A enterprise applications
