Work Hours: 30 hours/week (should be available to work on weekends)

Employment Type: Hourly Contract Part Time (4 months)

The Assessor is responsible for administering the CLB assessment tools and referring immigrants and naturalized Canadians to the most appropriate language training program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development. The Language Assessor works as a team member ensuring quality programming and service delivery, achievement of program goals and establishment and nurturing of effective working relationships within the program, the Association and the community.
In this role, you will:
  • Screen clients’ immigration status eligibility for placement in IRCC and MLTSD-funded language training.
  • Administer Canadian Language Benchmarks assessment tools according to principles outlined in the initial training and according to the YMCA, IRCC, and MLTSD policies and standards.
  • Refer clients to the most appropriate language-training providers based on Canadian Language Benchmarks, the national placement grid, and individual client needs.
  • Re-refer clients whose needs have changed since initial assessment.
  • Provide language needs assessment information to clients.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date client files and documentation using a shared database.
  • Prepare and submit statistics and program reports, as required, in a timely manner.
  • Maintain regular contact with language training providers and other community partners, thereby sharing program information with all stakeholders in a timely manner.
  • Participate in volunteer supervision, staff meetings, and professional development trainings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What you need to succeed:
  • Commitment to the YMCA’s Mission, Vision and Values
  • Focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children, youth, and vulnerable people in YMCA programs including understanding legal and moral obligations related to reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services
  • YMCA Competencies: Accountable, Relationship-Builder, Improvement-Orientated, Team Player & Leader, Equity and Wellbeing Promoter
You bring:
  • TESL Ontario accreditation is mandatory (no exceptions)
  • Experience teaching ESL to adults (300 hrs min)
  • Certification on the CLBPT, or other assessment tools is a strong asset
  • Knowledge of the settlement sector
  • CLB Boot Camp certificate is a strong asset
  • Post-secondary education in a related field
  • Proficiency in a second language is a strong asset
  • Excellent interview and assessment skills
  • Flexibility regarding assigned work hours and locations
  • Must be able to work weekdays, evening shifts, Saturday and Sunday shifts
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to effectively prioritize responsibilities
  • Ability to work in an efficient manner both independently and as part of a team
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
  • Proficient with personal computer applications, e.g. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, Internet search engines, power point, Excel, Zoom, etc.
