Summary:
The work schedule for this position is part-time - 20 hours per week (FMA and PSA). An early (7:00) start is expected, with flexibility to adjust schedule to support frequent ministerials and visits.

Start date: Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time (15 weeks) of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

Duties

The Press and Media Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Public Diplomacy Officer (PDO) Spokesperson. Supports press and media operations for the U.S. Mission to NATO, promoting understanding of and support for U.S. policy and the policy objectives of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and its Allies. Monitors, analyzes, and reports on international press and media coverage of issues of importance to the United States and NATO. Builds productive relationships with press and media professionals including editors, producers, journalists, media-related professional associations (including unions), and university journalism departments. Maintains contact with the press shops of NATO offices, NATO Allies’ diplomatic missions, and private/public sector institutions. In coordination with the Public Affairs team, assists with development of media tours and journalist training and exchange programs, assists during high-level ministerials, NATO Summits, and VIP visits, and provides logistical support during media interviews conducted by USG staff at NATO.

Qualifications and Evaluations
Requirements:
EXPERIENCE: Four years of experience in a media outlet, international organization, government, or the private sector. Must have experience with experience in communications, journalism, public relations, or public affairs.

JOB KNOWLEDGE: Understanding of communication trends in the region and internationally as they affect the NATO information landscape and must be familiar with influence patterns in information flow. Detailed knowledge of marketing techniques, market analysis and audience analytics. Understanding is required of U.S. historical, political, economic, social and cultural forces that shape U.S. foreign policy, and of U.S. press and media standards, norms and practices. Understanding of international press/media institutions and professional journalism standards and practices, as well as trends in audience preferences for information consumption (print, TV, radio, online) is also important.

Education Requirements:
University degree in Journalism, Communications, International Relations, Political Science, History, Economics, or related major is required.
Evaluations:
LANGUAGE: Fluency in English. This may be tested.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


Analytic skills: Ability to identify, analyze, predict and continually assess attitudes of press and media outlets and information consumers across a wide range of thematic policy areas is required. Must have strong analytical skills to match specific U.S. foreign policy objectives with relevant NATO audience attitudes, perceptions, and stereotypes, and the ability to conceptualize how best to use the full range of PD communication and program tools to move those attitudes in positive ways.


Communication/Interpersonal skills: Must have excellent customer relations, interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills. Must be able to identify influential voices in both traditional and digital information outlets, and engage them successfully. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills in order to speak publicly; write reports, press releases and other products. Must be able to tailer communications to fit formal and informal situations.


Management skills: Strong event and management skills are required. Must be able to organize and run events such as press conferences, speeches, interviews, workshops and journalism training seminars, often on short notice or in emergencies.

Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Brussels may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.

For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.


The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.
