Job Description
The Role
The Legal Counsel (Contracts) is responsible for drafting, reviewing and negotiating a broad range of contracts to support Beyond Bank’s strategic objectives. In this 12 month contract, the lawyer will play a key role in assessing and mitigating operational and information security risks – and helping ensure Beyond Bank meets its obligations under APRA’s prudential standards with respect to its contractual arrangements.
In the role you will
- Provide legal advice on APRA’s CPS 230 and CPS 234 standards.
- Act as the legal contact for contract-related queries regarding CPS 230 and CPS 234.
- Offer guidance and training on legal and regulatory requirements related to contract law, CPS 230, and CPS 234.
- Review and draft internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with CPS 230 and CPS 234.
- Collaborate with Risk, Compliance, and Cyber Security teams to ensure policy compliance.
- Draft, review, and negotiate various commercial contracts.
- Ensure contracts align with the organization’s legal and business interests, including CPS 230 and CPS 234 compliance.
- Advise stakeholders on contractual obligations, risk allocation, and legal exposure.
- Support the Total Customer Solution (TCS) and BBA strategy in areas like customer experience, innovation, operational efficiency, and workplace culture.
- Understand and comply with BBA’s risk management framework, including reporting incidents and adhering to risk and compliance obligations.
Qualifications

In this role you’ll work directly with the General Counsel, receiving hands-on mentorship and training to develop your legal expertise. You will be supported every step of the way as you grow your skillset and contribute to key strategic initiatives like enhancing customer experience and operational efficiency.
You will need:
- Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) or equivalent qualification (or currently in your final year of study) (Essential)
- Admitted as a solicitor/barrister in an Australian jurisdiction (Desirable)
- Some experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts (Desirable)
- Enthusiasm in spades
- Willingness to “jump in the deep end” (with support and guidance from senior leadership)
- Outstanding communication and organisational abilities
- Ability to work under pressure and manage competing demands, while maintaining attention to detail
- Ability to provide commercial and pragmatic legal advice considering business objectives and BBA’s risk appetite
- Demonstrable professionalism, ethics, and integrity
