The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses Mare Nostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for Euro HPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

The Computer Architecture and Operating System group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center aims at carrying out research on programming models for critical embedded systems in charge of controlling fundamental parts of cars, airplanes and satellites. Our work is mainly done in the context of bilateral projects with several processor companies as well as several European-funded projects. The objective of this engineering position is to develop safety critical graphics software support for a safety critical GPU hardware. Graphics Processing Units are increasingly used in safety critical systems like Automotive, Avionics and Space. Safety critical APIs such as Khronos’ Open GL SC 2.0 and Vulkan SC are targeting these devices in order to facilitate their certification for safety critical standards. In this project, the target platform will be the METASAT hardware space platform, which consists of a multicore space processor, connected to a custom GPU design. A software stack compliant with one of the Safety Critical standards will be developed.

The engineer is expected to enroll or have already been enrolled in the Master in Innovation and Research in Informatics (MIRI) at the Facultat d'Informàtica de Barcelona (FIB) - Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). The technical work performed during the candidate’s placement will contribute to the student’s Master Thesis. Upon successful completion of the Masters degree, the student may be offered the possibility to continue for a Ph D degree.
