Your responsibilities
Research associates will be expected primarily to teach and conduct research. The research associate will also have the opportunity to pursue further academic qualifications, in particular a doctoral dissertation. At least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the research associate’s own academic work.
The candidate will will use a model genus of marine diatoms, Thalassiosira, in order to characterise short- and long-term responses to warming and changes in light polar and temperate species. The candidate will use these data sets to establish reference epigenomes for two species within the Thalassiosira model system. The candidate will also investigate epigenetic features of trait variation and trade-offs using inter- and intra-species comparisons within the genus Thalassiosira. Teaching duties are 2,6 LVS.

Your profile
A university degree in a relevant field.
The successful candidate will have experience handling and maintaining arctic and temperate phytoplankton cultures under sterile conditions, as well as have a demonstrated ability to use and develop molecular tools (PCR, q PCR, primer design). Further, applicants must have very good skills in R or a similar programming language, excellent written and spoken communication skills in English or German, and a good understanding of phytoplankton traits and physiology. Teaching and supervision experience is advantageous, as if prior field work experience. They should be willing to participate in cruises and BSc student supervision.
