Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading

Context:
In a complex and uncertain world, the useful application of data for evidence-based policy and
action is needed now more than ever. Whether it be helping displaced people find durable
solutions in the face of climate change impacts, to analysis that allows better foresight for
migration scenarios and preparedness—managing human mobility to contribute to sustainable
development requires a data-driven approach.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has an abundance of information about
human mobility: With offices in almost every country, IOM is trusted by its Member States for its
deep knowledge and field expertise. IOM has strategic partnerships with other UN agencies and
stakeholders in the UN Migration Network. It works directly with a wide range of beneficiaries
and is at the forefront of data protection efforts within the UN system.
IOM established the Global Data Institute to harness the power of its data for operations,
capitalizes on synergies between its three units-the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) and
Global Migration Data Analysis Center (GMDAC), and the Data Impact and Strategy Unit-and
collaborates with a network of regional data specialists to illuminate the global data story of
human mobility.
Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director, Department of Media and Communications,
with a secondary reporting line to the Director of the Global Data Institute in Berlin, the
successful candidate will manage, coordinate and implement GDI’s media and communications
activities.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
Technical leadership:
1. Develop and implement GDI’s external communications strategy in line with the
Organization’s guidelines to promote an accurate narrative on migration with the media, the
general public, member states, the UN and multilateral partners.
2. Provide technical advice to GDI staff on communications and outreach.
3. Prepare communications content and public information material for GDI, ensuring
coordination with HQ’s DMC for global visibility.
4. Prepare, edit, and publish written materials to showcase GMDAC, DTM, regional data hubs,
and GDI-wide activities including press releases, newsletters, data visualizations, social media
campaigns, etc., in coordination with relevant units, and assess the impact of key performance
indicators, taking action and/or recommending modifications as necessary.
5. In coordination with the DMC, develop key messages and media lines to take related to
sensitive and emerging issues on migration data to properly address media queries, interview
requests and others.
6. Strengthen media relations on the GDI’s activities through proactive outreach, arrange data-
driven press briefings/trainings as needed, and represent GDI at media events as delegated.
Team and project management:
7. Manage the GDI media and communications team by setting up weekly, quarterly and yearly
content calendars and workplans, setting up benchmarks for success and impact analytics.
8 Ensure the visual identity and visibility products of GDI are in line with IOM brand and style
standards.
9. Conduct data-driven media training and capacity building on displacement and migration data
among the GDI media and communications team.
10. Develop strategic data-driven visibility campaigns for international days and other events.
11. Work closely with MCD in HQ as well as Regional or Country Offices and external partners
to help deliver data and analysis for action, insight, and foresight for IOM strategic objectives.
12. Coordinate, in collaboration with relevant unit leads, responses to information requests from
media and help arrange interviews by sharing lines to take and talking points, supporting
colleagues with technical assistance prior to media appearances, etc.
13. Undertake field visits to capture and document data-driven stories that are people centered
14. Contribute to the development of data-driven communications components and propose
innovative ideas for data project proposals to assist in securing sufficient funding for
communications activities and adequate donor visibility.
Other tasks:
15. Conduct media monitoring and other online analytics such as Meltwater to assess GDI’s
media presence, build media relations, and avert reputational risks.
16. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
- Master’s degree relevant to (data-driven) Communication and Journalism, (such as media and
relevant professional experience; or
- University degree in the above fields with seven years of relevant professional experience.
- Demonstrated experience in public information, web editing, mass media communication and/
- Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering comprehensive communications,
- Proven experience with Adobe Suite Applications (Premiere
- In depth knowledge of communicating data, statistics and information on international
- Excellent writing and editing skills, and a strong command of English, with an ability to convey
- Strong understanding of social media and the digital landscape.
- Strong Drupal skills.
- Knowledge of international trends and political, social and economic issues related to migration
- An eye for visual and creative communication.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate effectively across an organization and with multiple
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be
fluent in one of the three languages.
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of French
and/or Spanish, and another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, and Russian) is an
advantage.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process,
which may include written and/or oral assessments.
