We’re looking for a full-time Sorter to join our awesome team! In this role, you’ll be at the heart of our mission to create a cleaner, greener future by ensuring recyclable materials is sorted and processed efficiently. Reporting directly to the Site Manager, you’ll help organize and manage incoming waste streams, ensuring that recyclables are properly separated, and non-recyclable waste is kept out of the system. Your efforts will directly contribute to reducing landfill waste and supporting our sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sorting Materials: Manually sort through incoming waste and recyclable materials (e.g., paper, plastic, metals, glass, and electronic waste) to ensure proper categorization and separation.
- Material Handling: Ensure that waste is appropriately sorted into designated containers or bins to prevent contamination and maximize recycling efficiency.
- Inventory Control: Assist in managing stock of recyclable materials and ensure they are stored in the correct locations within the yard.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate basic yard equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and compactors to move materials as required. (Certification or willingness to obtain certification for forklift use is preferred.)
- Maintain Yard Organization: Keep the yard neat and orderly by stacking and storing recyclable materials safely, ensuring clear paths for workers and equipment.
- Quality Control: Inspect materials for contamination and remove any non-recyclable items from the waste stream to comply with recycling regulations and industry standards.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols to ensure the safe handling of hazardous materials and the prevention of accidents within the yard and surrounding areas.
- Assist with Waste Diversion: Work closely with supervisors and other team members to help achieve waste diversion goals and promote sustainability practices.
- Documentation and Reporting: Keep accurate records of sorted materials and report any issues, discrepancies, or safety concerns to the supervisor or manager.
- Team Collaboration: Collaborate with the waste management team, drivers, and other yard workers to ensure smooth operations and efficient material handling.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in a recycling or waste management facility is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of recyclable materials and waste sorting practices.
- Ability to operate or learn to operate yard equipment (forklifts, skid steers, compactors).
- Strong attention to detail, particularly for identifying contamination in recycling streams.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and adherence in recycling/waste settings.
- Ability to lift, walk, stand for extended periods and work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment, handling large volumes of waste and recyclable materials.
